Migration of BES 4.1.7 environment to BES 5 / ESX / HA

Dear All, what is your experience and practices about BES 5 / ESX / HA (Fail-Over) ?

We are about to move 3 BES 4.1.7 Domino (local MSDE) to a new environment (ESX)
Doing this move, we also would like to go for one centralised SQL DB for all BES (including fail-over)

We are planning to do a phased migration of the BES to the new environment.
Three servers, international (400 users), national (500), test (20).

Now regarding the component set up, in my opinion as we have only 920 users, it make no sense to actually install every Blackberry Service and Component for itself and enable a dedicated standby for them.

By your practices and experience, what services & components make sense to stand alone and which not ?

What are your experiences with RIM's HA or are you using third-party software to do that ?

Thanks a lot for your input! Best regards

My personal opinion would be to HA one box with all services. With only 900 users you can easily run that from one BES, with a 2nd HA instance.

The only component you would seperate is BAS and BMS. All other components can go on your primary and standby servers.

Thanks very much for your inputs!

As the users on the international server are our "independent" remote sites, we have them run on a seperate bes instance ... but that mainly comes from the time we had to restart the servers and do manual maintenance in order to fix some user problems ...

I was thinking to centralise the BAS & BMS + the Attachment & Collaboration Service on a small seperate VM - which operates for all three servers. With native VM reduncance.

So it's leaving the BES server instances with their specific critical components, for which an HA could be build up. But as they are also VM, the only advantages of having an dedicated HA would be the insurance against configuration & service components errors, as well as nice patching procedure without downtime.

Because with the VM hardware technical the servers are save ...

Am I missing something ?

Thanks again !

Re: Migration of BES 4.1.7 environment to BES 5 / ESX / HA

Note that centralizing all BES servers into a location and connected to a single SQL server is a good idea if and only if all servers are local. For e.g. All BES, mail servers, remote BAS, remote BMS and SQL are all in US. Or All BES, mail servers, remote BAS, remote BMS and SQL are all in India.

Note that BAS must not have a latency of >20ms with SQL server. Similarly, the lesser latency between BES and mail servers are critical.

See some potential issue:

Remember the golden rule of placing BES near mail servers + SQL server. You don't want latency due to bad geograhical setup to ruin your BlackBerry services. Good time to consolidate, planning properly can save you a lot of time after your BES 5.0 roll out.

Thanks for your addition noname. The inhouse latency is so far quite good. The latency between the international BES server and the global mailservers is rather a problem.

But centralising BAS, BMS, Attachment & Collaboration Service (for the two BES servers) shouldn't be affected because they only communicate with the BES server inhouse or am I wrong ? Thanks ...

Your problem is with the International BES server. Even though it is called "International", it is still located at Switzerland I presume? Then if your BES users' mail servers are in remote locations like Asia, then latency is gonna haunted you everywhere. Golden rule is still place BES as close to mail servers + SQL.

Yeah correct, that's also what is our goal in the long term, to at least have a dedicated BES physically located in all the continents. (Hopefully later this year ...)

But regarding the BES migration, there is no disadvantage when centralise the 4 services for these both instances or ?

For your 920 users, consolidating into a single BES 5.0 HA pair is sufficient for now.
