Blackberry stops working when outlook crashes due to huge mailboz

Dear All,

We are experiencing an issue and really need some assistance.

We have users who have exchange 2010 email boxes that are 50Gig +, as they are financial services users they do not want to archive or delete emails.

Due to the size outlook crashes, when it crashes the blackberry then stops working for hours at a time.

Also at random times the BB will not receive emails this goes for all users with very very large mailboxes.

We have the following set up
Exchange 2010 v14.01.0355.002
BES Express v5.0.3 - installed on the Exchange server
Outlook 2010

Would very much appreciate any help anyone could provide.

Thanks
Demetris

50 gig mailbox is huge, not sure how to help out if they wont delete or archive anything.

at least put old emails into a folder called old and keep only this years email in inbox and sent items

Thanks for you quick reply, unfortunatly management will not agree with storing emails outside of the exchange server, they have an archiver that does email stubbing but we do not want to fill it up. They want all emails on the exchange for compliance and backup. If your referring to creating folders in the exchange mailbox and moving them from the inbox then this already is done, don't think it has an effect on the BB.

I think it maybe something with the way BESExpress works with the mailbox.

One thought I had was that when exchange crashes it keep a connection open to the exchange and it is not released thus the besadmin account cannot access the mailbox until it has been released, does this sound logical? I'm not very familiar with the details of exactly the way the MAPI client works on the BES and Exchange to access the mailbox.

Do you have any ideas based on this or something else?

Thanks again

Just a guess:
Do you use outlook in offline mode (with a shadow ost file) ?
When you start outlook after a crash, it will check the ost file for consistency. Takes ages. After this is will most likely compare parts of the folder for changes against the server. Maybe this will lead to changes in the mailbox which are so many, that the BES needs time to follow it.

Wether or not this is the case, dont use cached mode with a 50GB mailbox if this is a Desktop PC.

To make the mailbox smaller, I make a new user/mailbox, give the user full access, and, move old mail there. As long as he is online he can acesss the "archive" mailbox from his outlook. If he uses outlook anywhere or the blackberry, only the current mailbox wil be avilible.
Maybe this is a way to comply with your companys policy ?

Yes they use cached mode, but because it take so long I had to change it to online mode so he could work, issue is it that he has a laptop and needs access to it.

Also the laptop is non-domain and uses RPC over Https to access ! adds to my troubles I think, but also domain users are having the issue so i ruled it out.

With the BB though would the size cause an issue? If we do any of the above will it solve the bb issue also?

Thanks
D

I really dont know if this will help.

to get a better idea what the bes is doing, examine the logfiles.
These are located in the bes programfolder\logs
