Hi. Just upgraded the BES to 4.0 and users are loving the over-the-air sync of contacts/notes but most are not happy about over-the-air tasks.

Using the desktop sync the used to just sync due task, and could put in filters to stop some being sync'ed. For example, using the desktop manager they could stop completed tasks being transfered and also put in a filter to stop for example tasks in a specific category being synced.

Is this facility available with over-the-air task sync? I can't find it anywhere on the 7290 or in the BES Admin. Its got to a point where we are now having to go round and install the Desktop Manager so they can just do a normal sync for tasks. This is obviously causing problems with our engineering support teams, we had hoped that after the BES4 upgrade we would be able to use/issue them using enterprise activation and have no overhead of desktop application support. To make our users happy with tasks, we are having to install the Desktop Manager.

I don't know about Notes, but with GW BES 4, the tasks OTA reconciliation are found under user properties->PIM Sync on the blackberry manager. You could also check your handhelds to make sure wireless reconciliation is enabled on them (goto tasks->options, make sure it is set to 'yes')

Yes, i've looked under there and nothing. The handhelds are set correctly and they are syncing tasks over the air, but there is no way to apply a filter on anythng (other than for email) . I have users with over 200 tasks and some who keep their completed tasks for reference.

Because the over-the-air sync doesn't have any filters their BB's are full of completed tasks and <all> tasks that they have. What they want is to only have due tasks and possibility to filter by category (so they can keep personal tasks only on the BB). This can only be done using Desktop Manager and a desktop sync (I think)

I would imagine so. We don't have filters for anything but email either.

They might be able to manually sync the ones they want with the desktop manager, but I've never tried to do that.

I too would like to see this feature, as I end up with my BB full of completed tasks that get in the way of finding the ones I actually have to work on.

My solution up until now has been to use a separate Outlook/Exchange folder for my completed tasks, and move my completed tasks into that folder. Since BES only syncs the default Tasks folder, anything in other folders won't show up on the BB.

This could also be used to filter out certain other tasks (although keep in mind that a category filter is availalbe on the BB).

Unfortunately, this does mean that some task management has to be done on the desktop, but in Outlook 2003, you can quickly filter on completed tasks (just create a saved view), and drag-and-drop them in on a daily basis. It might also be possible to script this behaviour (ie, move the task into the "Completed Tasks" folder when it's marked completed).

Although the bes server 4.0, desktop manager 4.0, and handheld software 4.0 allows OTA syncronization of contacts, calendar, tasks, and memopads, it lacks something. If you notice, only personal contacts from your Outlook is allowed. So all of the mapped contacts are useless while using the wireless sync option, especially when the mapped contact folders are contantly changing or updated. So, turning off this awesome feature would serve more usefull and painless than our alternatives.

As Admin for these BBs, it would be nice to know that we can roll out the units to our employees without going to the site to set up a new user. With the 4.0 system, I can easily activate the wireless sync from a central computer and simply give the unit to the new user. This is the best feature by far.

Does anyone know of any workarounds for installing the 4.0 handheld software for the 6280 and 7290 off of the same desktop manager 4.0? This is my only set back.

Has anyone found a better solution to the problem over the past 5-6 months since Merlin initially posted it? The problem being that when you sync your BB 7290 over the air with outlook it displays all of your completed tasks and there does not appear to be a way to hide them or filter them out. One past user suggesting moving completed tasks into a different folder in outlook but that is a pretty cumbersome solution.

Any help?

No, still no way to do it...Heres hoping for the next version of BES 4 to have it!
