Default adding a new server w/ bes 4.0

I have inherited responsibility of a server with BES 3.6, and I'm not very certain about how the Managment works.

We are about to get a trial version of BES 4.0 which we will most likely be keeping. I intend to build a new server with the 4.0 version to test with. If I keep it, will I be able to move my 3.6 server into the Blackberry Server Managment running on the new server?

After you decide to keep it, upgrade your 3.6 server to 4.0. This will prevent your users from having to recradle. Once you have it upgraded, you can move the users from the test 4.0 server to the production 4.0 server (w/ no recradling needed for those users).

Otherwise, you'll have to recradle.

If you are purchasing an Eval BES then you will have to install a full version because it will expire. Otherwise, if you have a full BES with just a temp SRP you can purchase a permanent SRP and still use the same install.

This is what we are doing, and I don't want to have to upgrade the old 3.6 or even keep it around. Will I be able to move all of the users and client licenses onto the newer server?

Since the SRP Identifier would be changing, they would all have to recradle to get the new SRP ID to the handheld. With BES4.0, you can seemlessly move users from one 4.0 server to another 4.0 server without them having to recradle. You cannot do this with a 3.6 to 4.0 move.

Assuming there are no issues with upgrading your 3.6 server's SRP to 4.0 (I'm not aware of any issues - I did not experience any issues), I would personally just upgrade the 3.6 to 4.0 and move the users to the new 4.0 server (through management console). You will want to export the user list from the 3.6 environment just in case there are issues during the upgrade (which you can plan on importing the users and recradling anyhow).

I'm curious though. If you already have a valid 3.6 SRP, why purchase a new 4.0 SRP/License? Unless you are getting a really good deal on the 4.0 license, it would likely be cheaper to just upgrade the license via TSupport subscription or something different (assuming 3.6 is not already upgradeable to 4.0 w/o added purchase).
