My company recently upgraded our BES to 4.0. Some of you may remember, my company does not allow MDS via our BES. With the upgrade to BES 4.0, I now have the BES MDS browser and service book even though the MDS service is still disabled. Can 4.0 be set up the previous way where I had no browser, service book or MDS service?

if they disabled the service, it won't send out the service book. despite it being disabled on the per-user basis, the system service for MDS is likely still running (on automatic) and thus you get the damned old service book. same issue here, and i absolutely hate it.

So they need to turn the MDS service off on the BES server.

stop the service and then set it to manual. this is assuming they have it disabled for everyone within BlackBerry Manager. if someone is using it (i have it enabled on my server for my uses/testing, for example; but everyone else is disabled), then this won't be an approach that can be taken (heck, if the latter part of that isn't mentioned, then it could allow you to easily find out if the BES administrators simply have it disabled for 'most' of the users, otherwise, they won't be reluctant at all in shutting the service down ... hehe).

In your IT policy, you have the "Allow Browser" option. If you set this to FALSE, the users will not see the application and the service book will be disabled.

Is that for the MDS browser only, though?

If I remember correctly, it should kill all of the Browsers on the device including the WAP. You can actually still get to the MDS browser using the ALT+Esc function, but you receive an error message stating that the servicebooks are not present.

I would hate for them to kill all the browsers, just their MDS so my carriers TCP connection will reign supreme.

Then that one in conjunction with the "Allow IBS Browser"-True should do it.
