Default BES License key expiration

Please Login to Remove!

Hi Folks,

We have been using a blackberry test setup for a little while now,
and decided to go on with it, only our vendor was is a bit slow and
canceld a few meetings with us, so untill today we havent signed
for anything yet, thats ok sofar, but our licence is about to expire
tomorrow, they did gave us a new key so that we can continue untill
they finnaly have found the time to come by and seal the deal.

only 'problem' is when i go to the blackberry manager on the BES server
and try to give it the new key, it says that the key is allready in use.
seeing its a other key then before i think it means that its another trial
key and therefore wont accept it, now for my question:

must i wait till tomorrow when the key is expired and i can give it the
new key then, or should i somehow delete the old key and then enter
the new one ?

thanks in advance for the advise,

Bjorn de Jong

I would try to replace the CAL key manually in the SQL database.

I also be worried about your SRP expiring. A temp SRP (SRP that starts with a T) is independant from your CALs, it has its own expiration date, usually a trial is 90 days. Once it expires your BES will not connect and you will not be able to route data through it.

The following is a description of the types of BES keys:
NAME Format (T=Temporary, S=Permanent)
SRP Identifier TXXXXXXXX or SXXXXXXXX
SRP Authentication Key xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx
CAL authentication key besx35-xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx
CAL ID Cxxxxxxxxxx
The x's represent alphanumeric characters. The important keys for maintaining connectivity to the BlackBerry Infrastructure (RIM's NOC) are a valid SRP ID & SRP Authen Key. The CALs (or new CALs) will not prevent expiration....they only allow you to add more accounts to the BES service.
Chances are you received a different SRP Authen Key to use with the same SRP ID. Only RIM can provide a "different" SRP Authen Key that will work with the same SRP ID. I had that done for a previous project awhile back. It's not a common occurence.
You could also go to the following site: http://www.blackberry.com/select/server/v41_trial.shtml
and download the latest version for trial testing. You'll be provided with a 60-day eval with temp keys. You may be able to use those keys in your current environment instead of waiting on the vendor.

Thank for the help, i downloaded the BES 4.1 Server and got new keys, so far so good. the upgrade also went flawlessly. changed every code except
for one, the 'CAL ID' i cant seem to find it anywere.

at first i thought is wasnt that big of a deal, but seening the server wont
start i could be wrong ^^"

Did change SRP Indent. and Auth, aswell as the CAL Auth.

in the Blackberry Server Configuration tool i tested all connections and all
goes wel, also validated the SRP Key and ID, that allso turns out ok.

only when i start the Blackberry manager i get the message that my Evaluation License has expired, could it be that there still is a registry key
that hasn't been reset after updating from 4.0 to 4.1 ? I got all the new
codes i need today, so they cant be expired the way i see it.

If you've changed all the keys (I myself couldnt find a reason/use for the CAL ID), then restart the BES server. Once you've added new keys with a different expiration date you shouldn't get that "License expired" message anymore.

Tryed the restart a few time, but that didn't work :( I called our vendors
technical support and they told me that i couldn't exchange a trial key with
another trial key and that there's nothing much to do about. our new non trial
key chould arrive next week. so in the worse cause we have to with untill then

just uninstalled the blackberry server and database, see if a new installation
might help me to cover the days.

Did you use the eval installation files to do the installation? If this is the case, than replacing the keys with permanent ones will not solve your problem. To find out if you have an eval installation of BES check the properties of BlackBerryDispatcher.exe and go to the tab "Version". Check the field "Product Version". If it says something like "4.0.x.x (Evaluation Copy)" than you have used eval installation files.

Well seems that evertything is up and running again :D

Deleted everything on the server, BES 4.1, Database, Registrykeys.
then reinstalled bes 4.1 and all went flawlessly, got me another 90 days
trial it says. now we doent have to decide today if were keeping the
blackberrys that we have in use now, we rather wait for our vendor
to get there and on the new Blackberry's that where show at CeBit 2006
