Default Has anyone upgraded to BES 4.1? - 06-06-2006, 03:56 PM

Hey guys, we don't have any T-support contract or anything so it will cost us $999 to upgrade from our current v4.0. I just wanted to know if anyone here had upgraded yet and thought it was worth the money or found any differences between 4.0 and 4.1. Thanks!

If you are not gonna be pushing out apps to the blackberry, I really don't see the need to go to 4.1

Anyone know of any other significant features?

How about tiered management roles? That was the kicker for us.

Exactly. We have our hands full running a network, so we have our end-user support team handle adding/removing users, etc. which they can now do without actually needing to access the server, or have more rights than they actually need.

What's the software/interface they use? Is it a MMC?

Its application-based. Same as the BlackBerry Manager UI (non-MMC) but scaled according to their permissions. Until BlackBerry Manager has a 'thin-client' web UI, I don't think any of this will be worth its weight in pennies. You still have to configure correct permissions on the database (can be done via permissions configuration in the Manager console now tho), service account mailbox, etc., in addition to installing the client on the users' machines. I really, REALLY hope they add the web UI at some point sooner than later (assuming its even in the pipeline). I was really excited about the role-based administration then highly disappointed once I played with it). Having remote database connectivity for remote semi-administrative roles is highly inefficient (remote office over WAN, VPN over WAN, etc).

The ability to play WAV files from the BES. Our VoiceMail is delivered to exchange as WAV files. With 4.1 users can play the WAV files on the BB directly from the BES.

For us that made the upgrade worth it.

How well does that work? We looked at a Unity plugin for BES that would allow the messages to be played, but decided it wasn't worth the effort at the time.

I have been searching around and it seems you are the only one to post that has gotten this working. Most of us either can't click to open the attachment or can click to open it but get an unknown file type error. What is your setup and handhelds (plus handheld code version) that has enabled you to do this?

Default Unity and BB - 07-27-2006, 09:35 AM

We are running Unity messaging at our shop but are not able to play the messages and we have upgraded to 4.1. The only way we are able to play them is if they are sent to the device as an MMS. I set up a rule in outlook to foward them to my device as an MMS but it seems not to be working.

Role based administration
User groups
New Attachment filters added
MDS studio
Domino and Groupwise like interface for Exchange

No Design changes as there were between 3.6 and 4.0
( If I was not a big BES shop,I would rather wait for BES 5.0)
