Default What is backed up on the BES?

Please Login to Remove!

Can anyone tell me data is actually backed up from the handheld to the BES? We are using BES 4.0.2 hotfix 2 with GroupWise 7.01 Beta.

Had a user that had not chosen to sync his contacts with a personal address book in GroupWise. He was just adding them to his phone and had hundreds and never backed up with the desktop manager. Our support group had problems with his handheld and ended up removing him from the BES, wiping the handheld and adding it back. Well fixed one problem, but now all of the contacts are gone.

Is it possible that these contacts are stored in the BES database? If I restored that to an offline server is there a possibliity of getting those back? Can't seem to find anything on blackberry's support site. Thanks in advance for your help.

Im not sure what GW is like but in exchange a user's contacts are part of their mailfile. In order for contact info entered on the BB itself to come over to exchange, either wireless sync would need to be on or a physical sync (via the desktop software) would need to have been done.

Meaning...if the device was never synching the data (contacts) to a place other than saving it locally (to a pc or server mail file) on the BB, you may be out of luck.

I believe the contact are only 'backed up' if you sync them into your Groupwise address book. As far as I know, the contacts are stored in the database, just like your email is not stored in the database.

I am in a Lotus Notes enviroment so things are a little different. Our BlackBerry address book is synced to username_AB.nsf (replicated copy of the users local copy) that is on a server. Regardless of the issues that I might be experiencing, I never have to worry about loosing any contacts.

Thanks for the input. I think that answers my question. I'll break the bad news to the user.
