Default What if you have 2 Global Catalog Servers?

Please Login to Remove!

So I'm reading thru RIM KB article 03304 (Message delays because of domain name resolution problem).

I have taken a peek at the registry key that contains the GC server value and it does have a correct, fully qualified value. However, we have 2 GC servers (since we have 2 Exchange servers, I guess). GC02 is the server name referenced in the key, but GC01 is the primary. Should GC01 be the value in the registry key? Anyone else have this situation?

I have sent an email to RIM, but their response and hold times are HORRIBLE lately....

I would do a ping to both using the netbios name from the BES server and pick the one that has the best reply or the one that has the smaller load.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7100i/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/103)

Interesting suggestion - hadn't thought of that.

I asked RIM the same question and they we're pretty non-specific. Said I 'probably' could change it, if I wanted to. I like your suggestion better

Having two exchange servers doesn't necessarily require you to have two global catalog servers, one global catalog server does the job as well. The question is how many domains do you have and are the GC's serving multiple domains. If its a multi domain environment and someone else setup the GC, careful on selecting which GC you manually pick.
If you wondering how did the BES pick a particular GC, it uses DSProxy on the initial MAPI profile creation, and will use the same GC as the Exchange server where the Administration mailbox resides.

Mail delays due to a global catalog server are very rare, no one should tell you that unless they have looked at your logs. RIM_GWResolveProxy error doesn't necessarily always indicate name resolution issues but ResolveName failed trying method 1, 2, and 3 will inidicate something similar.

If you spoke to RIM, you probably spoke to IRT(Initial Response Team) their first level support, which basically has no clue and are being fed whatever their seniors will say.

Look more in the MAGT logs if you suspect name resolution issues.
