Cool Unclear on BES Backups of handheld units

Please Login to Remove!

I'm fairly new to Blackberries and BES admin and I skipped the first timers posting, so here I am. We have a BES for Groupwise 4.0.3 with about 30 7100i and 3 7520. Today I have a JVM error 102 on my 7100i and after about 30 mins it went away after I attempting run desktop manager. If a unit dies and I must wipedisk, will the unit retreive from a backup a users personal entries from the BES? Should I ever have to use Desktop Manager backups or is everything somewhere in the BES for a user? Hopefully I'm posting to the correct place.

Thx

The only time our users use Desktop Manager to back anything up is if they use Password Keeper, since that doesn't get backed up on the BES. And since most of our users just tilt their heads and go "What's Password Keeper" when I ask if they use it, we don't even install DTM for most.

If you wipe a device and redo the Enterprise Activation, I am 99% sure you WON"T get any settings back on the same device. I think this is because the BES sees your email address associated with the same PIN and doesn't want to send duplicate information (I 'killed' my device once to see what would happen and didn't get any of my settings back when I redid the activation).

If you simply switch a user to another device (without removing them from the BES), you will get all of the little settings back (font, icon placement, etc), but won't get back Profile settings, Messenger contacts, Password Keeper info, and any 3rd party apps. There might be a couple of other things, but I can't remember off the top of my head.

By the way, just a tip, but posting and saying you didn't bother to search first won't go over very well with the majority of the forum members.....

Thanks for the tips.. I did search threads first. I just didn't do the new member posting.. I spend a lot of time searching here.. Haven't gotten fast at it yet.

So it sounds like the BES backup doesn't help much at all for recoveries... I need to train my users to dump into Groupwise contacts, notes and task to be sync'd...

Ahhh...sorry, misunderstood your first post - took it that you didn't search. Glad to hear you did

IMHO, you will NEVER get a foolproof backup. 98% of my users are more than satisfied to get back what they do get back. Those that get ticked off and give me attitude....well.....let's not go there. Fortunately it doesn't happen often.
