Default knife-edge cutover to new server - MDS issue

Please Login to Remove!

I did a knife-edge cutover from a BES4.1/Exch2003SP2 server to a new host. The hostname changed, but I kept the BlackBerry Server logical name the same as the old. Let's call the old server "OLDBES" and the new server "NEWBES". On the old server, both the windows hostname and BlackBerry logical name were "OLDBES". On the new server, the Windows hostname is "NEWBES" but the Blackberry server logical name is "OLDBES".

Everything basically is working fine now, except that when I go into the BlackBerry Manager on the new host, under:

BlackBerry Domain -> Servers

I see an entry for the BlackBerry server ("OLDBES"), and then I see the entry for MDS. This entry is listed as:

http://OLDBES:7080/mds

It seems to me that this is a web address, and the "OLDBES" hostname doesn't exist anymore. Shouldn't this be: http://NEWBES:7080/mds in order to match the new windows hostname? If I click on it, I get:

There are errors in retrieving data from the server. Please refer to the log for more information.

Looking in the *_MNGR_* log, I see an entry:

[30000] (08/25 09:39:02):{0x1774} Bad hResult 0x80131509, at mdsagview.cpp line 356, from AG call CMDSAGView::PrepareData - getServerStatus, source - System, error - The underlying con
nection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server.

If I snoop the network, I can see NEWBES arp-ing for OLDBES (which doesn't exist anymore), so it's trying to access MDS through the OLDBES windows hostname.

I can't seem to see any way to change this. Under BlackBerry Manager -> Servers -> Edit Properties, at the "MDS Services" tab, I see an entry for "Blackberry MDS Services URL". Currently it's blank (default). If I click on it, I can select "(Default)" or "http://OLDBES:7080/mds". If I change the setting to the "http://OLDBES:7080/mds" selection, it gives me an error that I can't connect to the MDS service. I think I want to enter "http://NEWBES:7080/mds" in that field, but it won't let me type anything in....

I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Your new BES is most likely holding a setting for MDS on the old BES in the config database but off the top off my head I don't know where.

May well be MDSConfig table though.

I didn't see anything in the MDSConfig table. But I did see an entry in the MDSAGConfig table. Looks like a single entry with the URL, and the login/password. I'm not sure if this is what's pointing BES to the MDS URL or not - it could just be the login info about this MDS instance, and the MDS instance is specified somewhere else.

I'm hesitant to change anything without some specific direction - don't want to screw things up too badly. I was hoping someone may have gone through this exact problem before ...

I don't know where that setting is stored, but I know you're prompted for it in the MDS setup. Seems like uninstalling/reinstalling MDS should let you update that setting.

If you do a knife-edge cutover you need to be aware of the following fields which might be changed:

If domino name changes:
Table / Field
ServerConfig / MachineName
ServerConfig / ServiceName
MDS related:
Table / Field
MDSConfig / MDSHost
