Default BES 4.1 & Vodafone UK

Please Login to Remove!

We run a BES server which we purchased through Vodafone UK.
As with the handheld software we find that Vodafone are dragging their feet a little bit with regards software releases.
Our server version is 4.0.4.9 and that is as far as they have gone.

We have identified the need for 4.1 - after reading through the feature lists we have immediately seen some options that we would like to use.

Vodafone UK haven't been that helpful with regards when 4.1 will be available - very much "When we say it is" is the best I can get.
Unless anyone here has any different information?
What are the implications of upgrading the BES server to 4.1 the "non Vodafone UK" route other than Vodafone probably not supporting our install?
There isn't anything Vodafone could potentially do is there to stop a 4.1 BES server sending out onto their network is there?

I've did some work with Vodafone late last year around device management and mobile email management for distribution to the other European OpCos. You'll have to check your service agreement to ensure you do not violate your support contract (if you are an OpCo). Other than that, Vodafone cannot "block" your service if it has been upgraded to 4.1.
As for the implications...have a look at the following docs

You can get a 4.1 update from any supplier, BES is not carrier specific in that sense. As dev says, you need to make sure it doesn't invalidate any support contract you may be paying for (to be honest if you're paying Vodafone to support you it's a waste of your money), but other than that you can do what you want. I'm surprised at what they said about availability, as a service provider we've been buying BES server software from Vodafone and can easily get hold of 4.1 (in fact we can no longer get 4.0).

I will admit that the Blackberry Server as a whole hasn't really caused us any kind of issue.
Because we were very new to it we did have a Vodafone engineer come onsite to help with the initial installation.
We have paid for a years maintenance just in case things were to go very wrong.

However the basic answers do always seem to be "Remove and replace the battery on the Blackberry device, it doesn't sound like your device has registered correctly on the network" or "Can you put the SIM in a regular mobile phone and then place it back in the Blackberry" on the couple of occasions we've called with more serious issues.

We've obviously got support on the Blackberry devices from Vodafone so maybe we really don't need to pay for the yearly support contract on the BES server.
I have just this moment contacted Vodafone again and have been told that 4.1 will be available from the Vodafone website "soon".
I explained that it had been out quite a while now and the guy said something about validation of the product before releasing it.
I think I'll give them another call back if you've been supplied 4.1 by Vodafone as it shows they are shipping it.

Well put it this way, we sell BlackBerry servers, devices and airtime to people like you, we're not a Vodafone client in the sense you are, but we're the bit in the middle between Vodafone and a user!! We have been selling 4.1 to our clients, which has been sourced from Vodafone, so if we can supply via them then I don't see why they can't suppply it to you as a direct client of theirs. Failing that (and if you're up for contract renewal) speak to us and get free support!!!

Another quick question with regards version 4.1

Is 4.1 considered a "major" or "point" release?
I kind of got the impression that 4.1 was more than anything just a major fix for issues with 4.0.
I've just got a reply from somebody at Vodafone who actually looks like he knows what he is talking about and he has told me to give another team a quick call so I can discuss "Product & pricing" for upgrading to 4.1

So an upgrade from 4.0 - 4.1 is actually a major, paid for upgrade?

Thanks again.

4.1 was considered a new version as opposed to an update or service pack, and was therefore deemed chargable. PM me to let me know what what they quote you just in case there's something we can do on it - no promises as I don't work in sales but you never know!!

Did you order it from the "technical sales group" part of Vodafone?

I also work for a Voda service provider and we have been supplying 4.1 since the start of August. Vodafone like to take their time with testing

I think there was a slight mis-understanding between me, Vodafone and the reseller we use to buy BES.

I was under the impression that 4.1 was a point release and would be provided as a free upgrade and not a cost one.
When I initially contacted Vodafone it would appear I may have managed to speak to the only person there who thought the same - as he told me they were still testing it and the upgrades would be available "when ready".

I've subsequently spoken to our reseller who has said we can indeed buy BES 4.1 right now and then either pay for an engineer to come on site and perform the upgrade or we can do it ourselves.
