Question Question about Pending Messages - 09-15-2006, 03:38 PM

A quick question about something that appears to be an issue in my company. I'm looking for some indication about how unique my experiences are.

We are running BES for Domino 4.03 with Hot Fix #4. This runs on a Domino 6.5.4 box. This BES has over 1000 users spread across the U.S.

I have a handful of users who have a relatively high number of pending messages (over 2,000, and some even over 5,000), and from what I can gather, this happens because they let their BlackBerrys sit in a drawer.

Internally, we've had several discussions about how to handle these users, generally coming to the conclusion that they are having a BlackBerry problem that they are choosing not to report for whatever reason. This problem would need to be resolved. Is this a common situation, or are we somewhat unique? What type of enforcement is used to keep this to a minimum? Is there a threshhold at which this type of thing begins to affect the performance of the BES as a whole?

Thanks,

The most pending messages might do is slow down your reboots. You can clear pending messages from the BlackBerry Manager if you want to get rid of them.

You should inform your user's that if they keep this up, they and you will never know if there is an actual problem with their BB with all the backup they are causing to their own queue for the handheld.

You can set the messages to expire or use the "do not send when in cradle" option, which can help them...

OR Monitoring tools can inform you which user has past the threshold that you set for pending messages per user and or per server...

The most common strategy that I have come accross is using the last contact time and if it reaches a predetermined value (i.e. 30 days) they contact the user or simply remove them from the BES.

In additionl to slowing the reboot time it will increase memory usage as all pending messages are stored in memory. You may want to purge the pending messages for these users.
