Default BES 4.1 SP1 to Sp2 upgrade problem - 10-05-2006, 09:04 AM

I am in the middle of installing SP2 on my BES server. I earlier today installed SP1 with no issue. The server has performed the reboot for the SP2 installation but when I go to enter my MDS Services DB authentication details so it can upgrade the mdss database it returns an error of :

DB upgrade failed. Database connection attempt failed.

I looked at services and tried to restart the Blackberry MDS Connection Service. But after restarting it immediatley stops again. Although this may be unimportant as the process seems to require all BB services stop anyway.

In the release notes for Service Pack 2 it mentions something about a problem related to the MDS and a new instance. It suggests I remove this instance from the Blackberry MDS connection Service Defintiion list of the Blackberry MDS Services. But I really dont understand what it is talking about. Again this may be related to actual blackberry handhelds and not the problem I am currently experiencing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hiya,

I have a similar problem. I installed from scratch at home a 4.1.1 BES server all went well.

Had 1 user configured, then applied the SP2 and I could not connect to my MDS database.

All service are started and the blackberry's receive email and can browse via MDS but in the Blackberry Manager I click on the MDS server and it asks me to login??

I then the msd user and password in and it says something about its going to launch a SSL certificate wizard.

Then nothing happens???

Did you fail to connect to the MDS databse in the second part of the install?

So after rebooting for the SP2 installation it then tries to carry on the installation at this point it tells me it can connect to the MDS database. I have restarted all the BB services so that my users can continue to work. However the MDS connection service will restart but then immediatly stop.

I am sure this is just a small configuration alteration needed somewhere but it is really starting to grate now.

When you check out the version of Blackberry manager it is reporting itself as the SP2 version.

The second part of the install goes fine. and the services are started with no problems. The only problem is it's asking to install a SSL certificate and it does not launch the wizard.

In your case did you enter in the corerct MDS database username and password?

Are you starting all the services as besadmin?

Did you do the install as besadmin?

Is besadmin a member of the local adminsitrator group and a normal domain user?

Hi all,

This is a known issue for 4.1 SP2. You will always be asked to enter the admin user id and password whenever you click on the MDSS URL in BB Manager. Instead type that URL in the Internet Explorer, enter the id and password. When prompt for SSL cert, view and install it. And you should be able to see the running status in IE. This is a bug, thats all I know. Hopefully a new hotfix will come out soon... another round of waiting...

thanks.

Was scratching my head for days on this one. Not much info about.

Can I pick your brains for another server problem this time with 4.1.1?

I recently upgraded our BES 4.0.3 server to BES 4.1.1 All works fine but when I click in the BlackBerry Manager on the MDS services it says:

"There are errors in retrieving data from the server. Please refer to the log for more details."

All MDS broswing and email seem to work fine from the devices but I can't even open the mds via a Internet Explorer page either??

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Is there a blackberry mds services - apache tomcat listed under windows services? If no, then you have not installed sucessfully. If yes, is it started at all? Try manually start it and see if there is any errors listed in the MDSS log under the Logs sub-folder for today.

Hey,

Looks like it did not install correctly as the only service listed about MDS is the "Blackberry MDS Connector Service" and no "BlackBerry MDS Services -Apache Tomcat Service"

Is there a way to only install the MDS? Or do I have to do the install again over the top?

I have JAVA 5.0 (SP6) installed too.

Noname was that aimed at me.

I cant see any service like that installed? But I am not sure if that would not happen in the second half of the installation anyway.

Is there an easy way to back out an SP2 installation and return to SP1?

plantagenet,

I think you will need to remove the BES 4.1.2 software and registry settings and install SP1 from scratch.

I hope you did a backup of your database etc before you tried to migrate?

Correct me if I'm wrong please,

Rob

Call RIM and there is a Complete install with SP2 on it like I have.
When installing click 'no' to the MDS services.
this is new to SP2 and you did not have this installed previously with SP1

I made the mistake on my test server. Untill I realized that I never had that service turned on.
Just upgraded 4 servers on Sunday teh 8th. All are working well.

gjminer,

I thought the MDS services allow you to browse internet and use your office's internet connection??

If you don't install this does it still work?

I did an upgrade from 4.0.3 and chose "BES Enterprise Server with MDS services" in the install.

The 4.1.1 upgrade failed on the installation part of the MDS services. No specific error. I have a backup of my database.

Should I do an reinstall over the top? Could it be my Java version installed on the server? 5.0(SP6) ??

Cheers,

Rob

I've been down this road with a few people. MDS is only need if you want to deploy your own apps. If you don't, do not select MDS on the install and you can still use the blackberry browser through your BES to see the internet.

They're a wonderful and evil device... but I can't put it down!

Is LCS considered an "app" that requires MDS?

Policies get in the way of fun.
