I couldnt find this doing a search although I guess there's a simple answer.

How do I change the default 48 hour password timeout when sending an automated email from the BES.

I can see you can change the Custom Activation Email message to say a different timeout figure but I am not sure if changing this value in the email has any real effect.

Is there a registry key or something somewhere?

You can not change the 48 hour timeout on the automated email. As a work around, you can set the password and timeout manually (up to 30 days). You have to email the customer manually as well.

Why then does it allow you to change the "$x" value in the custom automated email if this isnt possible?

It doesn't let you change it, it just lets you use it.

I just don't understand why it is a variable if the value can't be changed - just doesn't make sense to me.

What? how do you "change" it? It's a variable because you type in $x and the BES puts the value into the email. If you type in 4 hours then you haven't used the variable.

I have new information. I was looking throught the release notes for BES v4.1 SP2. Here is what I found...

ability to set the enterprise activation password expiration time beyond 48 hours

• In BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1 and earlier, the maximum expiry period for an enterprise activation password was 48 hours.
• In BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1 SP2, you can set the enterprise activation password to expire beyond
  a 48-hour period.
