Default Why did this happen? - BES Issue - 10-06-2006, 10:43 PM

Was having some issues with mail today (didnt receive any from 11:40 until about 5:30pm). Backed up device using DM and then wiped. Got EA password, activated but no autotext, profile settings, time zone or alarm settings were brought over.....i did the backup and restore in DM. Why would this happen...? I had over 200 autotext entries that are now gone?

Those particular (personal preferences) such as autotext, do not populate back onto the SAME unit if you wipe it and reactivate. You also notice that prepopulation of mail doesn't happen either. All of these thing occur only when you are switching to a different device. It may be frustrating but think about the logic. The BES doesn't know that you wiped your device, it assumes same PIN same device, not going to push out all of those settings. If it pre-populated mail again, it would double up your mail etc. It has no way of knowing that you wiped and are effectively asking to do everything again. Those items are up to you to restore after a wipe from a backup. Now on the other hand, if you had been switching to a different unit, the BES says ahhhh... same person different device, I will pre-populate mail and restore all personal settings as well as sync contacts, cal, memos and tasks.

Hope this helps a bit.

Good explanation besadmin23. Just to add to that yahtzee (as you're kind of stuffed a bit) what you could do is wipe your device and remove yourself from the BES. When adding yourself again and reactivating the device, the BES will class you as a new user and therefore pre-populate your device with email headers. It won't help with your autotext, but at least gives you something back from what you had on the device before.

Well, just swapped devices and then swapped back to my 8703 and it didnt bring any of the settings over.....the part that confuses me is that even before i tried to swap devices to fix this i had done a backup and restore. When i went to restore, shouldnt it have brought over my autotext as well?

Sorry to say this but regular desktop backups are useful for this reason.

I did a desktop backup. That is where the frustration lies.

My apologies. I see that now. No coffee earlier. So you are doing a restore and not getting your autotext back. I have not heard of that. Jibi probably knows which database it is.

No problem. The other things that weren't saved were my BlackBerry messenger contacts and web bookmarks. Nothing really that can be done now. I've added all of the autotext back in (that I can remember). Just irritating. Thanks.
