Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/125)

Just been given the nod that we will be upgrading to 4.1 and have read mixed reviews as to the best way to do it. My main concern is that we will have to to a staged upgrade on one server prior to roling it out to the remaining servers. Is it ok to run a mixed mode of 4.0 & 4.1 from the same SQL Database?

My 2nd concern is we probably use the MDS more than Email as we have a number of browser based apps that we have created to be used on the BB and have heard installing the MDS on 4.1 can be hit or miss at times.

Can people please give feedback on their upgrade, both positive and negative so I can create a checklist for the upgrade process.

Hi,

we have used the mixed-mode environment during three upgrades without any problems.
In two cases we had 2 BES (Exchange, BES 4.0 SP4) sharing one DB (1 time 1600 users, 1 time 800 users). We already had planned to add a third BES so we used the following scenario for that:

- stop both BES that use the same DB
- Backup DB
- set up a new BES with 4.1 upgrading the DB to 4.1
- test the new server
- start the "old" 4.0 servers
- move users from old server 1 to new server 3
- down server 1, install from scratch with 4.1
- move users from older server 2 to new server 1
- down server 2, install from scratch with 4.1
- distribute users between servers.

Didnt experience any issues with that

Regards

Mark

Sounds like a plan, so you never upgrade a server when there are users on it?

We did in one place (Australia) an in-place upgrade - went also fine.
In the other scenarios it was easier, a shorter downtime and a better fallback scenario.
