Post Exchange SP2 & Blackberry 4.0 - 10-19-2006, 02:04 PM

We are about to upgrade to Exchange SP2 and I was wondering if anybody knows of any compatibility issues between Exchange SP2 and Blackberry 4.0. Thanks.

Actually there is no problem to implement exchange 2003 sp2 with the BB. Just make sure that the CDO.dll and MAPI32.dll in your BES and mail server are the same version. Right click on those file names and click 'version' tab. if it is not the same version, apply the sp2 on the system manager on BES. Also, re-check all of the configuration after you've installed the sp2. Service pack installation could cause exchange to somehow "restore to default".

There IS a problem with SP2 and 4.0. In SP2 the way that calendar entries are dealt with has changed.

Traditionally if you created an appointment in Outlook it would create an entry ID, which would then go to BlackBerry and if you changed anything in that appointment (such as the time) then the same entry ID would be updated. In SP2 when you change a calendar event it actually creates a new entry ID. As BlackBerry takes it calendar info by entry ID's you would then end up with a duplicate event on the device.

This is easily overcome by installing Service Pack 4 or above on the BES.

We are about to patch our 2003 Exchange Server to SP2, and we currently have a BES running 4.1.2. I guess my only issue thus far is to install the Service pack on the BES server as well, after exchange has been updated.. Does that sound right?

You need to make sure that the installed Exchange System Manager corresponds to your Exchange version, you will need to apply E2K3 SP2 also on your BES. This will update ESM and its components, like MAPI and CDO.DLL.

Ok, we do have ESM 2003 on the BES.. We will be doing this tomorrow, and I just want to have my ducks in a row. Thanks for the help.
