Question Messages moved to personal folders not coming off bberry

Please Login to Remove!

Up to this point had always thought if one moved a message to personal folders that it would not delete off the handheld because it never was "officially" deleted from the mailbox. However, I have one user who has used Blackberry's at other businesses and claims that this in fact is not necessarily the case. Please advise. Thanks!

Just a guess, check general email options and turn on "Hide filed messages"

Nice idea, but that's already set.

man I sorry I reread what you asked and I was backwards, if hide filed is turned on then when he moves something in outlook to a folder it will disappear off the device, sorta. If you turn hide filed off then they will still be able to see them. Sorry for the confusion.

The setting is turned on, but moving a mail message from his inbox to personal folders still does not remove the message from the bberry.

The reason that this is happening is because your BES server only monitors the changes that happen in your Exchange mailbox. Since pst folders are local to the Outlook client they are not contained on the Exchange server. During moving of emails to a personal folder, the BES notices that a message has been moved from the inbox. However, when it goes to look for the message in the Exchange mailbox it can not find it since it was moved to a local pst file, so it just leaves it alone on the Blackberry. This also happens if a user has their deleted items set to delete when they exit Outlook and they exit Outlook before the Blackberry can synchronize with the mailbox. I would suggest not using pst files with Blackberry users.

The Hide Filed Messages setting is only for messages moved to sub folders of the inbox.

That is what I have been telling all of my users since I started supporting these...but this one user is saying that at his other jobs this wasn't the case. I'll have to tell him gently(due to being a mucky muck) that he's full of it.

How about on non-Exchange systems? Would this have been possible? Just curious.

Thanks for reassuring me that I haven't lost my mind.

You should be able to go to Intellisync then PIM Settings for Email and select the Personal Folders options there, but it only works during while its connected via USB cable. In your case, until you upgrade to BES 4.0, it really shouldn't matter to the user, as they will be connected at some point or another.

You may want to test this out, as I've never really cared to try...

This funtionality would be the same on all BES environments. The BES checks the trash for messages to remove from the BlackBerry, if it skips the trash it will stay on the BlackBerry. Only way around this is to sync .pst's as said above.

The problem with not using pst files is that your mailbox ultimately becomes too large. I have over half a gigabyte of emails stored in my pst folder, organized by client names. Not using a pst folder is simply not an option.

In any event, it does not seem to me to be too difficult for the BB to simply synchronize the Inbox. If a message is gone from the Inbox on the Exchange Server, then the BB can assume the user either deleted it or filed it. The fact that the message does not "appear" in another folder that the BB accesses seems to me to be irrelevant.
