Yes. several of my customers have gone to 4.0 then onto 4.1. No SQL is not included, if you wan't SQL then get your MSFT chequebook out. If you want MSDE then that's included. As to whether users are auto copied over, then yes if doing an 'in-place' upgrade and your DB is currently on your BES server.

what is msde? is that an option i can select during the upgrade? we are planning to support around 400 users if msde can use will it be sufficient for that amount of users?

MSDE is an "small" SQL Server you need an SQL Database since Version 4

Rubbish...

you can run your db on either MSDE or SQL server in versions 3.6 onwards...
As to which is the most suitable to use then it depends on a number of criteria like

Number of users - the greater the number the more the number of users...
Need for "semi-automatic" failover
Need for flexibility
Do you have a SQL server instance (and skills) currently otherwise $1.5K for the license (guessing based on uk pricing)

I've re-read your post and you talk about 400 users. Personally I'd be going down the SQL server route with that number of users.. I think you need to contact your vendor to see what paid for BB support options are available..as clearly you need some fact time with a tech pro to fully understand the options, costs and implications..

I'll second Bertie on this one. MSDE on it's own is sweet, but obviously pay attention to the above criteria as these should influence your decision.
