Default SMS/MMS tracking (big brother is watching...)

Please Login to Remove!

hello,

i got my blackberry through work and am on a business server with MS exchange. since all my e-mail goes through that server, i assume it could, theoretically, easily be tracked. does the same apply to sms and mms or are those sent directly - without going through our business' network?

thanks!

This will probably go to the BES section, but I can tell you that I have read other threads on this same subject and the reply appears to be something like: the admin can view everything, but probably will not have the time or energy to do so unless required.

thanks for your feedback. so since there are actual admins in this forum and no one seems to be 100% sure, if SMS and MMS can be tracked, is it safe to assume they probably can't?

If you are on a BES 4.1.x than your messages (PIN and SMS, I don't know about MMS) can be tracked on the BES. On older BES version there are 3rd-Party-tools which allow such tracking and storing of PIN and SMS messages.

To go into a bit more detail, if enabled, it synchronizes your local handheld database stores for these types of data to a CSV file on the server. This could include SMS (not MMS), PIN and Phone Calls. The first two would be synchronized with the To, From, Subject (if applicable), Body, Time, Date, etc. Again, this is only for BES 4.1 and is only enforced through IT Policy. Phone Call Log synchronization is enabled by default, and the SMS/PIN logging would need to be enabled by the administrator.

...but with that said, in most corporations, it would usually take an action from your HR/ER department to have such auditing turned on and actually monitored. I would lose my job if I enabled these policies and looked at the content of the logs just for the hell of it. I would think most companies would have to disclose what they're logging, in the spirit of privacy laws and protections. So keep that in mind - not every administrator actually utilizes all of the capabilities they have at their disposal.

I agree! I don't have time to be nosey. My HR department would have to request this of me. Although I must admit, when I 1st upgraded to BES 4.1, these new logs were awesome to discover & it was a bit fun to see who was calling whom . Since the upgrade...haven't been back since...it's to much to look through.

Cool thanks!

thanks guys for all your input! so assuming it can be tracked, would an administrator - theoretically - also be able to see the body text of the sms or the attached pictures of an mms?

i know what you're thinking ...i'm not just sending naughty sms, but one just needs to be sure *LOL

Uh, hum...oka-a-a-y...I believe you **LOL**! The good news, we can't actually see the attachment or file name. We can however see the body of text and the other info:

"Name.ID",
"PIN",
"Email Address",
"Type of Message","To","Cc","Bcc","From","Subject","Body"," Send/Received Date","Server Log Date","Command","UID"
