Thumbs down Hosted Exchange & BES express not supported by RIM

Please Login to Remove!

I have been having a major issue with the BESAdmin user's GAL not being picked up properly by my new BES Express install. We run a hosted exchange environment and want to offer a hosted BES as soon as possible.

Well after a lot of mumbling RIM have finally got back to me declaring that within a hosted exchange environment the BES Express will not work. I should go and buy the full BES.

My questions are:

1. I thought BESexp was the same as the full version with just a user cap.

2. Why should it matter our exchange server is hosted? The BES is on the same LAN, in exactly the same configuration as if the exchange server was just in our office rather than our data centre.

Cool

Thats news to me. I would love to see something in writing about that. I run a pretty big hosted bes installation (5000+ users) and have never come across that before. Looks like i will be creating a new vm to test that out, i wouldnt put it past RIM to do something like that but that sounds strange. You have the proper registry edits in place?

See my email from RIM (via Orange UK)

"Hi paul

I have had the following from RIM

With regards to the SRP S14698951, this is listed as a BES Express 1 user BES which would not be covered for a hosted Exchange environment."

After speaking with the engineer at Orange he told me that RIM blamed my active directory structure and also that the BES express talks to Exchange in a different way to the full BES enterprise. Sounds a lot like they just cant figure out the problem.....

What reg edits are required? I wasnt aware of any till now.....!

And BES express is the same as "full" (enterprise?) BES with a user cap.

Which comfirms again my theory that the RIM engineers have given up without any real attempt to fix it.

"Here are the necessary registry changes for your hosted BlackBerry Enterprise Server that will enable users to do contact lookups and distribution list lookups from their BlackBerry’s without any chance of looking up users from different hosted organizations.

The following keys would need to be created and configured, in order to restrict users to viewing the address lists of their own organizational unit, but not the entire Global Address List (please consult the "Configuring address lookup support in a hosted environment" section of the BES System Administration Guide for more details on the below keys configuration.)

HostedServer = 1
LDAPALPSearch = 1
LDAPSearch = 1
LDAPCompanyField = msExchQueryBaseDN ()

Please note that the BESAdmin account must be able to read msExchQueryBaseDN attribute of all the user accounts. Since usually multi-tenant hosted Exchange environments do not have rights propagation turned on for customer OUs, please make sure Read permissions for the BlackBerry service administration account (BESAdmin) account are configured appropriately.

RIM suggests the msExchQueryBaseDN () field as one of the more logical fields to consider using, but you can use a custom attribute field if you have implemented them in your environment."

RIM's words above, although all you really need is the HostedServer dword value under the agents field. I find doing LDAP slows down a server dramatically

Thank waddyjohn, I will investigate this further. Just so you know this was in my mail this morning from Orange UK:

"Good morning Paul,

RIM have confirmed that Hosted Exchange is supported but under the configuration of a Hosted BES. For you to be licensed for Hosted BES they would have to sign up as a partner as described on the link.
