Port 4101 is used by Blackberry Desktop Manager software's serial bypass - handheld manager for least cost routing (aka wired routing with LAN). Open it else users using Desktop Manager will not have this feature.

LCR or TCO ...depends on the argument you want to make when it comes to bandwidth versus software support.

Benefits: Bandwidth bypasses the carrier network and routes messages directly the device when cradled/tethered. For users on carriers without true unlimited plans, this may be a preferred or alternate method of lowering post-limit carrier data charges. BDM installed allows for full driver charging of the device.

Negatives: BDM is required for the carrier bypass to work. This increases TCO for desktop support personnel and software maintenance (as seen with complete rollout of BDM updates required during DST).

It's a trade-off, to be honest. The upcoming BlackBerry Web Desktop won't support the bypass feature.
