Default BES 4.x Out of Office Agent via BB Breaks when Mailfile owner set to Editor in ACL

Please Login to Remove!

This is an issue I have been struggling to understand for some time. I have recently had some time to sit down and actually figure out what was going on here, and have a full blog post with the gory details.

Basically, if you tighten down your user level mailfile ACL to Editor access for your users, the Out of Office functionality will be inconsistent between the BB device and what Lotus Notes displays. This is very bad when your users believe these OOO messages have been sending out when they actually have not been. It undermines trust in the BlackBerry device as a reliable tool.

I am working with RIM on this and hope to have them recreate the issue and log an SDR, for those who are interested in the details you can check out the full blog posting at:

Very interesting, we have only just dropped our users down to Editor.

Look forward to a conclusion, we have not had reports of this being broken - I expect no one uses it.

Also, FYI In Notes 5 users needed Designer with the Create LotusScript/Java Agents role enabled , not Manager.

Also from your document, even though the Blackberry clears the "Run on behalf of" field when disabled via the Blackberry, this shouldnt matter.

When AdminP enables the Out of Office agent it will populate this field if it is empty.

Hi BES4Domino, I agree that AdminP does fix the issue. However in this situation our users will be repeatedly prompted with the blue text and a delay in enabling their Out of Office agent. Many times our attorneys want instant feedback as they are out the door at 6:00 pm to catch a flight, for example, and don't have the patience to wait and verify it enabled properly or not. I know it's a small issue but it is all about user perception after all.

Also, this is the only time where the BES will not pick up the OOO change, when the AdminP enables it instead of the user directly. So in this case, it does cause a issue with the BB showing the OOO disabled, but Notes showing it enabled.

It's always a funny argument.

The Out Of Office agent always needs to reply quickly.

However, if you are in the office you can take your time to reply (even longer if you are in a meeting).
