Default Mucked up software config and need assistance

Please Login to Remove!

I created a software config a while back to update our BB"s with the DST patch. To get it to install on the devices I had to change the IT policy "allow third party downloads" to "true". Once all devices has the patch installed I changed it to "false". Now I want to make a config to install google maps on the devices. Because I didn't want to change that IT policy again and leave the device open to users to download and install what they want I did some reading. That lead me to post 61 in this thread. Wireless Application Push

Now, I'm not to sure what I did but when I try open the "edit" of the config nothing appears underneath "Application Software". I figured I'd just delete the new config I created for google maps which went smooth. When I check the "edit config" of the DST config that was created a while back I also see nothing under "Application Software". It seems that I mucked something up. I then decided to delete that config but I get the following message. "You must remove all users and unassign any groups from this Software Configuration before it can be deleted". How do I remove the users from the config?

I'm at a loss and not sure what my next move is. I could call T-Support but I know that the people here are quicker and smarter. If anyone could offer some asssitance it would be greatly appreciated. BES 4.13

Thanks

Ok, I figured out how to remove the users from the config. I will remove all users and the delete the config. I will then try to recreate the config and see what happens.

Though it shouldn't, hopefully removing the users from the config won't remove the DST patch

Thanks

Boy. Reading this post I thought I had created it. I am working on the EXACT same thing. We are looking at pushing out Google Maps to all of our users and I had the same questions about "Allowing 3rd party apps". I found the same article and tested it out on my one user test server. It seems to work just fine which makes me happy.

It seems like there are a few bugs with the software deployment mechanism but I can get by most of them with a few tweaks here and there.

deleting the software config will not remove the software. that can only be done by the user or by a software config that specifically denies the app.

As for Google maps, if you added it properly to the server and indexed it, then it should appear inside the list of applications in your DST software config or you can create another config.

"disallow 3rd party apps" has to be set to false to push apps. Unfortunately, this leads to giving the users free reign to install what they will and if a serious malware is developed and released for the BB, it leaves your org suseptible.

Ok, I got the config thing all figured out. A few drinks and some sleep works wonders

If I set the third party to false and follow the procedure in post 61 of the thread I refered to (Wireless Application Push) am I not effectively stopping users from downloading and installing what they want?

Thanks

yes, you are. Because Post 61 sets up a whitelist, which means only apps in the list will be allowed on the device. It will delete any apps not approved in the configuration and deny the ability to install anything not in the coinfig. So, I set up a whitelist with google maps and DST included as required and applied it to my device. Theoretically, it will install/leave google maps and DST, but delete BB411 and bass assassin because they aren't in the software config. Unfortunately for me, it took it one step further and deleted google maps as well.

I am quite disgusted at the whitelist and how it works. Be very cautious when applying it to existing devices. Or you may end up like me, manually re-installing apps after the whitelist deleted them. When applied to new devices, it works like RIM claims.

Do you have two seperate software configs are the two cobmined into one? I don't know if that makes sense or is even possible. I've got mine split in two. When I edit the config for the DST the google app shows on the tree but is unchecked, wireline, and disallowed. The DST app is checked, wireless, and required. If I edit the config for google maps that app is checked, wireless, and required and the dst app is unchecked, wireline, and disallowed. When I right click a user and click "assign software config, I can choose either app.

Thanks
