I am newbie trying to install Bes 4.0 and was wondering if IIS 6.0 is needed. If so can someone tell me why. I haven't been able to find any info on this from my searches and there are conflicting opinion(does need to be installed - doesn't need to be installed) in my group and we need to come to agreement on this issue before installing. Can someone please give me some insight on this?

IIS6 is not required to install the BES.

Ok. So it shows it as a requirement in the Blackberry Enterprise Server For Microsoft Exchange documentation. That is why an agreement couldn't be made as to install it or not. Can you tell me why Blackberry requirements say that it should be installed?

Its convenient for me to have it running, but not for anything more than personal reasons (ringtones, applications, etc). Where do you see it as a requirement for BES? I just looked in all of the PDFs (particularly the Installation Guide, which is where the requirements are listed) that I have and did not return any results for IIS - Internet Explorer is required, though.

under which section in the guide? perhaps i'm looking in the wrong installation guide for BESX?

i just looked in my guides for BES 3.6 and 4.0 and saw nothing pertaining to IIS. *shrug*

I think it requires IIS5 at install time for the exchange administrator stuff... and maybe some of its components. I thought about disabling it after I finished installing, but I just set it to deny all connections not from itself.

ahh, you're right on that. i wonder why the dependency for IIS during the ESM installation, though. odd. microsoft says you can disable SMTP and NNTP after the installation has completed.
