Default Question (IT Policy related - Phone call logs etc)

Please Login to Remove!

Hey Guys,

Finally on 4.1 waa whoo!

Now if i set the IT Policy to not allow Phone Call Logs, and SMS Logs etc... will this take effect right away?

For example... a user has 1000 phone call logs... then i set the IT policy.... what happens if i give him a new device with it not pull them down?

Cheers

If you're referencing the "Disable Phone Call Log Wireless Sync" policy, then it has nothing to do with the wireless backups and activation synchronizations. This is an auditing-influenced policy that synchronizes the Phone Call Logs handheld database to a CSV file on the BES server. The same goes for the PIN and SMS policies.

If you don't want the thousands of phone call logs to impact an activation, you'll need to do some prepatory work and purge the database from the handheld (easiest method is to 'delete prior' when viewing the logs). You will then need to wait up to 24 hours for it to synchronize the deletions to the SQL database (where backup data is stored). At that point, you activate the new device and it should have minimal call logs (thus taking less time to activate).

In future versions of BES (I believe the next service pack, but I could be wrong), we'll have a little more control over what is backed up wirelessly and what isn't.

Alternatively, if options and settings and all that jazz aren't too important, you have the option of purging his all of the user's backup data (from within BlackBerry Manager) and activating a new device. The downside to this is the obvious lack of non-call log information that would normally synchronize back over (sans PIM information, which will always pull from the messaging server).

Are you going to Messages > Options > View Folder > Phone Call Logs and highlighting the top date then bringing up the menu? I cannot recall an OS which didn't have this function, although I will admit that I rarely if ever use it.

ah ha i was trying to do it from the phone screen.

Thanks Jibi

So it will take over night for these messages to purge with the BES right?

Any other way to seal the deal?

You can try "reconcile now." That's about it.

Hmm, without impacting other immediate-needs backup/restore functionality or other users, I don't believe so, no. I've never looked at the database to see if the backup data is organized in any sort of modular fashion, although that may be an avenue. The only reason I say 'overnight' is because that's what's always been advised. You may want to look into the Wireless Backup appendix in one of those PDFs included with BES and see if it has a time frame on how often the data is synchronized ...it may be in the 4-hour neighborhood, to be perfectly honest.

I don't know if this helps or not but I routinely delete all the phone logs before attempting an OS reload/EA for our users. If there are thousands of phone logs it will really bog down an EA, as you probably know. I delete them and then do a reconcile now. I wait about a half an hour and then run the update and subsequent reactivation and have had pretty good success with the phone logs not returning. YMMV.

'Reconcile Now' shouldn't have any impact on the wireless backup of the Phone Logs database, though. Me thinks someone is just getting lucky.
