Default Unable To Add Users To BES 4.0/Domino 6.5.3

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I have BES 4.0 installed on a Lotus Domino 6.5.3 server, but I am having problems adding users in the Blackberry Manager. I can add users from the Domino directory and they appear in the Blackberry Manager list, but the user status is stuck on "Initializing" and the PIN field is blank.

Setting the email address in the user profile document with Domino Administrator populates the email address column in Blackberry Manager, but otherwise this doesn't seem to help. I've waited for days and the status has not changed.

The BlackberryProfiles.nsf database is blank -- could this have anything to do with my problem? Any ideas?

First off....is this an upgrade from BES2.2.x? Or are you activating older devices e.g 957s?
If it was an upgrade...then run an Updall, Fixup and Compact on the Profiles.ntf/nsf databases.
Check the BES logs and see what type of activities are occuring in the MAGT, Dispatcher and Sync log files.

I am using a clean installation of BES 4.0, and no older devices are connected. I'm actually trying to test a push application between a Domino server and Blackberry, so I'm keeping things as simple as possible.

Is there anything in particular that I'm looking for in the MAGT/Dispacher/Sync log files? And thanks for the quick response ...

The logs would indicate the requests sent by the BES server to the users handheld PIN.
You should see info such as OTAFM and OTAC config requests being sent. I'm curious...you said that after adding the user...they are stuck on initializing. Have the users cradled their devices (device code 3.6->3.8 have to)? Only devices running the 4.0 code can be wirelessly activated.

I am unable to assign a handheld to the user.

1) OTA activation is a no-go -- the Domino server is not configured to receive incoming email, and the admin won't let me mess with it.

2) On a separate computer with the Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.0 installed, I can go through the Lotus Notes login all the way past the window where it asks me to move the mouse around to generate the key, and then I get the message "The computer does not know its email address. Either the email system is not configured properly or this email system is not supported."

3) After connecting the Blackberry to the BES/Domino server itself, and trying to assign the handheld to my test user (still on "Initializing"), I get the message saying something like the Redirector service does not recognize the user. (The server is currently down, but I'll pull up the exact message later).

This may take a while to troubleshoot....since you have an uncoperative notes admin.
Why don't you pm your coordinates, and I'll send you some docs. That might prove to be faster.

bchen,
Not to come off wrong, but I assume your using the admin client hooked to a device via a USB to assign hardware to accounts.

That is one of the ways that I am trying to go about this, yes.

One way you can activate is set up the Desktop Manager on someone's PC that has their Lotus Notes setup and running. Once you run the Desktop Manager, it will ask you for the name of the BES server, put it in and then it will ask you to change the PIN. Unforetunately with this method it's normally set up only for one person. It's the "poor" man's way of setting it up, but you'll be able to assign stuff.

One odd issue I've run into is that in the beginning, I was trying to connect to an external database on another machine. However, I remember something requiring Windows authentication instead of SQL authentication made me give up and use MSDE locally instead. The Blackberry Manager configuration has the correct settings for the local database, but the registry key still points toward the initial database server that I tried! And if the initial database server is inaccessible, or if I change the key to the local machine's name, Blackberry Manager won't run; I get the error message "System Problem - please review log for additional information. AdminServer Client Library failed to initialize."

I'm going to try reinstalling BES, but after uninstalling, the BES installer won't seem to run. I'll keep trying when I get more time.

You really need to find a way to become friends with the Notes Admin. The one I worked with did far more work than I did on the entire project.

I installed all the BB software and architected the system layout, IP addresses, NAT's etc.

He configured the Domino piece just as the document said word for word and we choose to use SQL 2000 installed locally on the server since it was so high powered.

Aside from one firewall change to allow the BES server to send mail through our Ironmail gateways the system came up flawlessly.

Hi bchen,
Did you read all of the info I sent? If you can describe what has been done ( to prepare the domino environment), then maybe I can help get your BES up and running. You have my email....send the description if it's to long to post.

Fixed after reinstallation.

I had to delete the Windows registry key that was storing the (incorrect) database server name after uninstalling BES before installing it again. Activated through desktop client. Thanks a bunch, everyone!

How many users do you have to set up? Just seem strange that you are using 4.0 and doing activations through the Desktop Manager, just seems to labor intensive.

Just one test user for a java application I'm developing. OTA activation won't work because the Domino server isn't set up for email, and plugging the BBs into the server itself would be just as annoying.

A Simple solution since I have had the same problem. Either re-kick off the Enterprise Activation or Upgrade ASAP to a Hotfix or SP1 to cure the issues your seeing and this will fix the reg keys pointing to the wrong db.

Anyone using Dmanager to activate, thats too much work for such a new software to eliminate the manual labour.

If you re-install BES, also dont forget the CAL number you have assigned to your 4.0 Server.

Hi - I get exactly the same error message all of the sudden on my BlackBerry Desktop Manager. It worked fine until last Friday and now it stopped working giving me the same popup. Server is running fine though and if I install the BlackBerry Manager on a different machine it works fine.
Which registry key was it that was giving you trouble? Maybe it'll get my BlackBerry manager going again.
(Running BlackBerry Manager Version 4.0.2.3 on Win XP SP2, Bes 4 with seperate SQL box on Lotus Notes/Domino)

Thanks
Andy
