Default Monitoring data usage - Historical Stats - 10-09-2007, 08:22 AM

Hi,

I got the request to provide stats on the data usage of our users.
I used the HistoricalStats tool which comes with the Blackberry Resource Kit.

My question now is, does this include everything?
All fields are clear to me, except the MDS TO and MDS FROM fields. (complete extract of the legend of the HistoricalStats tool below)
Do they include the internet use, the sending of service books, IT Policy, ... as well?

Is the traffic that is generated by all wireless reconciliation requests (TO and FROM) also included in these numbers generated by the tool?

Quote:
OTAFM TO
number of wireless message reconciliation requests sent to the BlackBerry device; this is wireless folder management data

OTAFM FROM
number of wireless message reconciliation requests sent from the BlackBerry device

CICAL TO (in bytes)
number of compressed ICAL (CICAL) bytes sent to the BlackBerry device; this is wireless calendar data

CICAL FROM (in bytes)
number of CICAL bytes sent from the BlackBerry device

CMIME TO (in bytes)
number of compressed MIME (CMIME) bytes sent to the BlackBerry device

CMIME FROM (in bytes)
number of CMIME bytes sent from the BlackBerry device

MDS TO (in bytes)
number of bytes sent through the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service to the BlackBerry device; you can find this statistic in the BlackBerry Dispatcher log file

MDS FROM (in bytes)
number of bytes sent from the BlackBerry device through BlackBerry MDS Connection Service; you can find this statistic in the BlackBerry Dispatcher log file

OTASYNC TO (in bytes)
number of synchronized bytes sent over the wireless network to the BlackBerry device (wireless personal information management (PIM) synchronization data); you can find this statistic in the BlackBerry Dispatcher log file

OTASYNC FROM (in bytes)
number of synchronized bytes sent over the wireless network from the BlackBerry device; you can find this statistic in the BlackBerry Dispatcher log file

Many thanks in advance

Kind regards,

Filip

Maybe I'm looking at this too simplistically, but I get voice and data usage reports from my vendors and just dump that data in to MS Access. Of course, that's AFTER the bill cycle has ended.

Are you looking more for real-time usage?

The problem is that several users got bills from €700 going to €1300.
We are trying to figure out where these monstrous bills come from.

When looking at the transferred data ,I see with the historicalstats tool a traffic of about 45Kb, where the provider says that 6,9Mb has been used on a specific day for a specific user.

That is why I'd like to know if these stats are complete or wether surfing or admin traffic (IT policy, service books, reconciliation requests, ...) are to be added to these stats.

If these stats are correct and complete, then there is a problem with the service provider.
Otherwise something is generating huge traffic besides the sending of mails..

Thanks for your quick reply

Hey Filip_PwC, "HistoricalStats" tool is just showing BES data only i.e. not 100%. Your Blackberry device usage from service provider will definietly exceed BES' data.

...if there's one area where America leads the rest of the world in the wireless and cellular industries...

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.
