Default Blackberry OS 4.5 coming this week? - 02-04-2008, 05:28 PM

Can anyone else comment on the rumor that the OS 4.5 will probably be coming out this week some time?

I can comment: I give it a 5 for originality, a 7 for execution, and a 10 for mass appeal.

I've not seen anything that deviates from the early rumour about the end of February. What are you seeing that changes that?

Yeah, I'm kind of curious as well. They have some nasty bugs right now still in the beta. If customers are to get these versions, which are current as of a week ago, then there will be some very unhappy people on the forums.

It would have been nice to get it by christmas like the last rumor...didnt see that one happen, so not sure why I would believe this one either. Pretty much use the good ole rule of thumb, whatever you think, multiply by 5, and thats when its coming...so my prediction is May

Rob, from what I'm hearing from all carriers, you should be pleasantly surprised. The intent of RIM was to have the upgrade available when they launched BES 4.1 SP5 and shortly thereafter BIS 2.5. The initial date for the BES upgrade was November and then moved back to mid-February. It has since been removed from the Life Cycle portal, so it's status is currently in limbo. The latest beta OS versions we have are still OS 4.3.1. If there is a delay, it's fairly last minute and should not hold up release more than a month or so, in my opinion. If the delay ends up being fairly big, I wouldn't doubt it's release in the Asian market followed up by a few more rounds of QA and possibly an April release. It'll be out before May, unlike BES 5.0 (which was initially slated for a May 2008 release, per RIM's announcements last year at WES ...it's currently in pre-beta and has slipped no less than 6 months, possibly 9-12 months).

I hope that your assessment is correct, although coming from a past of working in Engineering, dates always slip and therefore, my guestimate was May...but believe you me, I hope that you are right and I am happlily surprised.

thanks for the response

What do you all think that the new release will have that the existing version doesn't have?

How credible is this source? Some of us have been waiting for key features and are missing out on the "video" etc.

Is this for sure?

Does this mean no video? I thought the new OS was going to allow units like the 8300 to record video.

I just hope that this new software...with all the hype it is getting, isn't riddled with bugs...that will be a huge let down.

i have read that there were more recent versions available. then again that was a comment from sum numbnutz on the pirate bay. I trust your post much more so than what I have read there. I have used the beta, and in my less than humble opinion, it's sweet... I'm hoping the final release comes soon.

And whoever said they spoke to an AT&T rep who gave them an estimate to a release date.... What store do you go to?? Cause everybody who works in my local AT&T stores rode the short bus as a kid. They know nothing about anything related to OS upgrades firmware upgrades...etc. I was even told that upgrading my OS would void my warranty. WTF?

Buying a cell phone from any carrier store is like buying a computer from a typewriter salesman. They know what it is, but thats about it.

I've also heard that the most current betas have some major bugs and some serious hour glass issues.

I'd be surprised if anything came out this week.

Unless some real work has been done on usability in the last week or so.....

great list, just to add to it, I heard about the possibility of being able to control Bass and Treble should also be there in the 4.5/4.3.1

Looking at the torrent comments for the one you replied to in there, there's quite a few newer builds of OS 4.3.1 than it. That one was Release 36. The latest I've seen are Release 59. That's roughly 2.5 months of builds between those versions.

The person who spoke to an AT&T representative would have spoken to someone, likely a technical engineer directly or one by way of their corporate account manager, rather than some nitwit in a store who has little to no information. Store personnel typically get information a) from internet forums such as BBF, b) internal training material (usually released very close to actual retail date), or c) internal computer systems (such as the case with SKU numbers for pre-releases; typically input a couple weeks prior to actual release for billing purposes). I would think it rare that store personnel, with the exception of very few who have connections back to a main office, would have any useful information further than 2-3 weeks prior to release date. That number may even be pushing it. With the phone representatives, they are generally outsourced and have hardly any knowledge or information on products they take calls on (I used to work for a company that had an umbrella company who did Tier 1 support and telemarketing for AT&T) - there is typically a small window for training and it's not all that great (exception being an iPhone, although many had never even seen an iPhone even after it's release).

i think some people will see OS 4.5.0 *this* week, but it won't be available to the public. rumors are that internal certification builds are being rebranded for the first time this week/next week.
