Default OS 4.5 - What's the big deal? - 03-31-2008, 09:07 AM

I was really excited to find a leaked copy of OS 4.5 for the 8310 late last night and stayed up to install it. Once I got everything running though, I was pretty unimpressed. Aside from the video and voice recorder there's not really much else in this update that changes the look & feel or usability of the device.

I already have html email with empower and actually prefer the options in that app to the native implementation. Word document editing is cool but it's just a 3rd party app. Media player is still slow and no gapless support. No real notable improvements to mail or browser.

This was supposed to be a 'big' update but it doesn't seem that way and there's nothing in here that's going to put the blackberry OS experience on par with an iPhone anytime soon.

If anything, I hope this update allows me to use a 8GB microSD.

lol, you didn't notice any difference in the browser?

And there is no HTML email in 4.5, so would not have noticed anything there. There are other enhancements many users have been requesting (playlists, silent dialing) that you might have overlooked.

Overall, it does seem to be an improvement, but if someone told you OS 4.5 would put you on par with an iPhone... nah. You'll have go buy one to get that.

Jsanders or John Clark- i was just thinking: I'm using 4.5 and of course there are a few bugs, I cant send out MMS but I can recieve, cant open vids sent from another 8310 either. I love having the vid recorder, and I love the new browser.

Not so happy with the emails, want my bbsmart viewer back and it made my BB Messenger icon invisble on the bottom dock.

Soooo I was wondering if there was a way to copy the .cod files or whichever files it is from OS 4.5 that allows vid recording and the browser and add those to 4.3 for now?

No I dont no alot about adjusting operating systems so if this is really far fetched dont be so hard on me lol!

I would not recommend doing that. But if I were... I would completely back up my BB, do it, and it if doesn't load, reload the good OS and restore data from the back. Not a real big gamble. I don't think it will "fry" any electronics, of course*.

Finally, remember there IS a reason these are BETA Operating Systems, and there IS a reason it is NOT released to the public for use. It is NOT finished. Use at your own risk.

I don't think many of us will be supporting questions here on the forum answering questions on how to troubleshoot OS 4.5, UNTIL it is in final public release. Until then, it is impossible to know what version of the release one is using, etc., and they are different from one release step the next.

*Disclaimer: I did NOT sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

When was this OS leaked? As stated above, is it still BETA or is it pretty much the final product?

It has not been released by any carriers nor RIM.

There are some users spreading it around over at Crackberry. They risk lawyer letters from RIM.

I was upset that it wouldn't work on my 8320 from T-Mobile. The screen kept blanking out on me every 10 seconds and then would do a full reboot. I did the battery pull and must have reinstalled the OS 4 times with the same results. I narrowed it down to the wifi/radio. If I left those 2 off, it worked fine. but once I turned either one on, it turned into a very expensive paperweight. Oh well, I guess that's why it's beta. Just chaps my hide that other people are able to use it with no complications. My main need was so I could finally use all 8gb of my MicroSD card.

and this is why there is a dedicated BETA team that works with RIM to test these products. Also why you shouldnt mess around with the OS that isnt installed yet. How happy would you have been if it caused an error you couldnt recover from, and you destroyed your device?

ok so im loving the new os but i think im going to downgrade. this memory leak is crazy! i uninstalled ptt, doc2go, sample video, languages, games, and had about 23blah blah free. so everything was fine.

today it is saying 15something and I havent even added anything new, no videos nothing! and it keeps going up and down. but now my bb is running slow becuse of the memory and I dont want to start losing emails. I also cant send MMS or see youtube vids. I can get mms though, and my BBM icon is invisible.

Downgrading tonite!! I think I should wait.

I am personally within six weeks of upgrading to version 47.0 (at 46.10 currently) and the memory leak is horrible.

The BB is much better.

I have noticed that my memory is no better than with 4.2.

I'm as anxious for 4.5 as the next user, but I'm with all of you-I can wait until the release.

And my memory leaks so bad I don't remember what I had for lunch today.

the memory leaks like within the hour its down, and I dont want to start losing emails. but its awesome otherwise, cant wait for the official release

are you sure? i didn't think they removed support from the 4.5 code, just from the bes (4.1.5)

Doing the memory cleaner does nothing to increase the free memory on your device.

i assume that means ur running it? to clarify what youre saying for my benefit, you can't send/receive html email? i knew this, but am i correct in saying that the 4.5 code does have the ability built in, but without bes 4.1 sp6 or bis 2.5 you cant use it? or am i completely off base?

so what can i do? when i uninstalled doc2go, and the other stuff i had like 25(bunch of numbers after) now it just constantly goes down. All my pics and music and ringtones are on my memory card.

I cant wait to get home and downgrade, at least my bb will run smoothly.

when i take off 4.5, all i have to do is delete 4.5 from my pc right, and then run app loader?

I never uninstalled os 4.2.2.194, so that will load on the berry right?
