Default 8320 4.5.0.42 Wi-Fi Issues, Sad to Relate - 06-09-2008, 08:48 PM

So I downloaded 4.5.0.42 from the usual place during happy hour, installed it on my t-mobile 8320 and went over to starbucks to test performance at a t-mobile hotspot, turning on wi-fi and turning off the mobile network.

Now for those of you who don't know, normal behavior when you enter a t-mobile hotspot with a t-mobile blackberry is that you automatically get the b&w wi-fi icon plus uma, assuming wi-fi is checked on. This time, even though connection manager saw the open network, the wi-fi icon stayed gray.

So I opened the browser and clicked the NYTimes bookmark, and what did I see but the t-mobile login page for laptop users. Since I do happen to pay t-mobile for monthly laptop access, I entered my usual login/pass and the wi-fi icon changed to b&w (still no uma).

The following now worked: browser access, email, blackberry messenger.

The following failed, usually reporting the radio was turned off: pocket express, viigo, yahoo one search, beyond411 search. I'm not sure about google apps. And of course I couldn't make calls.

I then went over to a panera free wi-fi location, logged in, had the same experience.

I think those are the 3rd party apps issues not the berry it self. I could be wrong.

These apps work fine over the wireless network, just not over wi-fi.

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Do you have the proper certificates installed? There haven't been any reports of wifi/uma issues with this release.

Please explain/expand on this, for us uninitiated. What exactly must I do?

Go to mobile.blackberry.com on your device. There should be a link there for UMA issues. Download two certificates. It will give instructions.

Tried that, never got an install button, immediately got the certificate summary with a view button, this probably because the root and trust certificates are already installed. I suppose I could wipe the blackberry.

Given that I seldom use wi-fi/UMA, I'll probably stick with the betas. Hopefully t-mobile will roll out a release before too long.

I'm using .42 and I am having UMA connection issues since upgrading from .18. Perhaps I'm the only one, and if that's the case, maybe it's a phone issue. I checked the certificates as suggested here, but they were already installed. My problem seems to be specific to UMA in that I can not get all calls to connect. When the problem happens, the blue arrows will flash in the corner like it is connecting, however, the call will fail and the incoming arrow will flash rapidly. I can usually get a call or two to work after a reset, but eventually it happens again. Any suggestions (other than downgrading)?
