Default OS 5.0 for older devices - 04-24-2009, 10:47 AM

Will OS 5.0 ever exist for 88xx/83xx?

For the 83xx, likely, yes. If the hardware will hold up to the OS.

I don't recall on the 88xx.

I'm currently suffering through 4.5 on the 8830, and I hope they don't try to cram another OS into this device. The on board memory is tight on the 8830 and I bet a larger release like OS 5.0 wouldn't fit. Currently I can only have Google Talk and Google Maps open before it gets completely unusable because of available memory.

Hate to bump this one up, but has anyone seen any 8130's with 5.0?

Back in the day....

4.5 was said to be the final OS update for the 87xx... All other devices were stated to get 5.0 it will be just a matter of time, however the 87xx series will pretty much be End Of Life.

Wirelessly posted

5.0 should be an incentive to upgrade.

You assume that RIM doesn't want to keep their customers happy then?

RIM's business is built around steady progression of technology rather than flogging the latest and greatest fashion phones. I'm sure there are plenty of businesses quite happy with their hundreds of old Curves or 8800s that won't replace them with new devices.

However, how many businesses are there that don't want to or can't swap out devices but DO want newer functionality? (Look at HTML email in OS 4.5.)

RIM seem to support old devices pretty well - hence you can get OS 4.5 on an 8700. Long may it continue.

I'm gonna jump out there and say it is highly unlikely you will be seeing OS 5.0 for the 87xx, 81xx and 83xx devices. There were initial 5.0 builds for some of those devices, but you won't see more.

Well it was already said that the 4.5 was the last upgrade for the 87xx so that's the end of that.

I don't know, with all the new devices RIM is spitting if we do ever see 4.5 for the 83/88/81 it will probably a looong ways off, if ever.

So you could be right.

I know, I was talking generally about RIM supporting recent devices.

From 8130 to what? I still have 7 months to go before I'm eligible for upgrade pricing....

I am a suretype user -- there is no way I'm going to upgrade to a full keyboard or a larger form factor. And forget touchscreen as it stands now...

So 8230 Flip -- that's it?

I would think that they would come out with a 91xx device to satisfy the latest generation of hardware with SureType - I would hope that a 91xx device would launch with 5.0. Also, if you only have 7 months until upgrade, that should put you right in the thick of OS 5.0. I never considered that OS 5.0 would be out before this fall/early winter.

I haven't had anyone confirm with me that 5.0 will be available for 83xx

I do know that the latest beta of 5.0 is incredibly unfinished. A friend of min running it has shown me BB Messenger wont even launch, there seem to be some minor heat issues, lots of random crashing and very poor battery life.

That along with Quincy all of a sudden not able to send reports in.

He said it's one of those things where he loves to have the latest software but of course it's sometimes more of a pain than anything.

Looks like the OS is maybe getting a September/October release for the Bold. He's not in the OS group so he didn't know too much as far as release dates and what devices will get 5.0

I seen hybrid OS built for the 83xx ... I will probably try and build one for the 8110 when I upgrade to a 8900 curve in next month or two? Possible? I don't want to toss out the 8110 yet though I love the suretype compared to qwerty damnit.

Although installing a hybrid OS isn't without risk (don't complain if you brick your device), it's very easy to build a hybrid OS.
I'm currently running my 8800 on 4.5.0.161/5.0.0.100 hybrid and it's running great. So if you're up to it, give it a go.

Good luck! I don't feel comfortable enough to take OS files from different devices from way different OS versions :(

Can you explain this a bit more or point me in the direction of where to start? A google tells me there's plenty of hybrid stuff for the Storm but I'm not seeing a noddy guide or much for non-Storm devices.

I'm fairly technical (I'm an experienced C++ software developer), but at the same time I don't want to brick my Curve. When you say 'brick', do you mean the proper definition of literally making your device unrecoverable, or the misconceived definition of making your device not work as it should, but it's recoverable?

Now that BBM 5.0 has leaked out...and has been shown to run on 4.5 devices (Curve, Pearl, 8XXX). There is a good possibility that 5.0 is being further developed for those devices. Only time will tell. I have run a very early 5.0 beta on my 8310 (5.0.0.29) and it did have a lot of issues.

BlackBerry 9000: OS 5.0.0.314
BlackBerry 9530: OS 5.0.0.328
BlackBerry 8310: OS 4.5.0.175/174 Hybrid
Dual Boot: Windows XP SP3 & Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

I'll take the under, and say you won't see anything else past .53 for those devices.

Bet a dollar?

Something tells me I should not bet against you with that dollar and just head to the dollar menu with it lol
