Default Beta OS not loading? - 06-06-2009, 11:14 PM

Hmmm.... I just obtained 4.6.1.239 and ran it. Then I deleted vendor.xml and various unneeded .cod files, to optimize memory. When I ran DM, it didn't tell me that new versions of various things were needing to be installed. It didn't do anything, in fact. It's as if I hadn't run the 4.6.1.239 installer at all. Any ideas what could cause that? The device is an 8900, running 4.6.1.114.

Edit: I tried the "Update software" option in DM, and it found the 4.6.1.239 version, which I checked (and unchecked .114), but when I clicked "Next" I simply got a "No software required for this device" and no action.

Wirelessly posted (My Bold)

Run the exe file in the same folder as the vendor.xml file is (program files/common files/research in motion/apploader). This will allow you to update

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried it, but the result was the same as before. Something I didn't mention before is: When I connect DM it tells me "Updated versions of the applications listed below are available for your device", then it lists "Danish language support", "Swedish language support", and "Norwegian language support." If I click "update now" then after it searches for available software, it tells me "No software update is required for your device." Then when I go through the "Update software" option in DM and select 4.6.1.239, I get that exact same message, as stated above. I'm not sure if the Scandinavian language thing is relevant to the problem or not.

Delete Vendor.xlm file from your computer. Than try again.

I did that. It didn't work. I take it this is a new problem.

What I thought was supposed to happen is:

1. I run the 4.6.1.239 installer and it installs all the OS files. That seems to have happened.

2. I delete vendor.xml so that I'm not locked into a vendor-specific configuration.

3. When I connect the BB and run DM, the DM compares the OS on the DM to the last OS that was run on the computer. If different, it tells me to update.

That's how it always worked with my 8320. I did about a dozen beta OS updates on that, without a hitch.

Step 3 seems to be failing. Trying to do it manually via "Software update" also fails, even though it "see" the new OS files on the computer. It also sees the 4.6.1.114 files, tagging them as "current". I actually don't know where the .114 files are on the computer. They're not where I'd expect them to be.

Since nobody seems to have an idea of what has gone wrong, I'm going to download and install the "official" 4.6.1.114 from tmobile.com, and then try to upgrade to 4.6.1.239 (since I can't find .250). This 8900 that I have was bought on ebay, unlocked, and although it came in a T-Mobile box, maybe there's some quirk in the OS from the unlocking that's causing it to refuse the upgrades. Does this sound like a reasonable approach?

For the record, I downloaded the "official" 4.6.1.114 installer and ran it. DM still told me no software upgrades are required for my device. Then I ran the 4.6.1.239 installer again, deleted vendor.xml, and started up DM. I got the same result as before. So, no beta upgrades yet.

If anyone is reading this, I've discovered in "Security Options" that I have "Secure GC enabled" on this device. I don't know if this is relevant to the OS problem I'm having. There's no apparent way to turn it off.

I checked here, View Document and it says that "Secure GC enabled" means that I have content protection turned on, but in fact I don't have it turned on.

Can anyone shed any light on any of this?

I should add that in Security Options > General Settings, under "Services" it says *** no services ***. I think that means there's no IT policy. There seem to be differing opinions in this forum about what "Secure GC enabled" means. Some think it means there's an IT policy; others don't.

I don't know if there's any point to using JL_Cmder to "resettofactory" and then try upgrading to 4.6.1.239.

Thank you! That worked (like) a charm! The problem, then, is in DM, not the phone.

Now that I have 4.6.1.239, I'll see if all this was worth it.

Again, thanks. I like simple solutions.
