Lightbulb 8900 5.0.0.130 -- fix for SMS's not being received - 07-28-2009, 01:14 PM

(note: this is a re-post of a note I put up on another forum -- thought it might help some of the folks here who don't necessarily also go there...)

I installed 5.0.0.130 on my 8900 around 2am, and was not able to receive SMS text msgs after that, although I could send them. Reading the discussion here, it looks like at least a few people have that same problem. Lots of theories, recommendations about doing battery pulls and re-registration seem to work for some, but not for all -- and didn't work for me.

With a bit of digging, I found under Options / Advanced Options / Security Options / Firewall that somehow the option to block SMS messages was checked -- even though I never used this feature myself.

I unchecked this, saved my new security settings. I had some other issues going on at this point re: uma vs UMA, but once that was resolved, I was now able to receive SMS messages with no problem whatsoever.

If you're having problems receiving SMS messages -- check your BB firewall settings!

DAMN! I wish I had seen this post before I lost a day and a half trying to resolve the problem before throwing my hands up in the air and downgrading!

He lists a good review here, including an app list.

Rob -

Which phone are you using, and on which carrier? I don't have your earlier posts in front of me, but your profile shows 8300 on AT&T, so I'm a bit confused. If you're using an unlocked T-Mobile 8900 on AT&T, then my guess is that you might have forgotten to reset your APN to point to AT&T's AP.

Also - others reported that doing a battery pull and resending svc books helped them.

Not sure if any of this will make a difference, but it's 3 more things to try...

Hi. Thank you for your reply.

I'm on AT&T with a Bold. Sorry for leaving that part out. I think the problem may be manifested when the device manager does a restore of my previous SMS, emails, etc from the backup. It seems that the device can receive SMS text messages up until that point.

Is that a good clue?

I've done all of the "tricks" - battery pulls, service books, re-registration....

Thank you again,

Rob

FB, of course, doesn't work. A bit disappointing, but it seems that life will go on even if I can't be on FB 24 hours a day...

Since that big post I did where I listed apps that work/don't, I installed Viigo again, and it's working quite nicely. So I can add that to the "works" list.

As noted in the other list, BB App World doesn't work (although it seems that the 3rd party App programs *do* work very well!). Docs to Go won't let me download updates for it.

I just tried the Audio Postcard again -- I can snap the picture, crop, add a frame and a voice note. When I go to send, it seems to queue it up to send -- but that invariably fails (red "x" next to it in my messages list).

Visual Voicemail *almost* seems to work -- but as I noted before, it probably has to wait for our respective carriers to configure something at their end.

Still and Video cameras work.

Between that last big post I did and this, that's all I've got loaded on my 8900. If I can get UMA to stay on while I'm home (it's on now for some reason, as I type this!), then this is close enough so that it will be worth using for me until something newer comes along.

That's it -- nothing else big that I'm aware of that doesn't work.

Did you look at Options / SMS Text and see if everything looks right in there? You'll have choices such as:

Delivery Report (on/off)
Data Coding (7 bit or 8 bit, with 7 being the default in my case -- not sure what you should have with AT&T and the Bold)

Service Center -- this is the 10 digit phone number with a "+1" prefix used as your SMS gateway. T-Mobile uses +12063130004 for this -- not sure what it should be for AT&T -- I would check this out.

You can skip over the next couple of items and look at "Network to Send Over". You can chose Circuit Switch, Circuit Switch Preferred, Packet Switched, or Packet Switched Preferred. Mine was set to Circuit Switched, and I changed it to Circuit Switched preferred -- this way it can theoretically take advantage of other networks if T-Mobile's isn't available (although I'm sure it's a lot more complicated than that!).

Although you just did this, if it were me, I'd probably check the firewall again to make sure that all boxes under "block incoming messages" were unticked, and that firewall status shows as "Disabled".
