Default 8330 : OS 5.0.0.230 leaked... - 09-28-2009, 05:01 PM

Well, it seems OS5.0.0.230 has been leaked for 8330...

Edit : "8330AMEA_PBr5.0.0_rel355_PL3.5.0..exe"

I have heard it will not load on "8330m" phones.

Good find. I think I may be a guinea pig on this and load it either tonight or tomorrow morning.

I'll be giving this a shot over the next few days, unless reviews are that bad.

I'm going to keep my eyes on the reviews. I just completely rebuilt my BB tonight and am not sure I want to go thru all that again so soon.

Awesome - Sorry for dupe thread.

I did load it. Seems to be working okay but I keep locking up when deleting Messages.

Anyone else?

So far, so good. BES activation was fine. Quickpull doesn't work, not a huge deal there. Installed the updated FB app which also works. Threaded IM conversations is nice.

Correct, it will not.

I also read that it will only work on an 8330e (ESN) device, and not the 8330m (MEID) device.

thanks. that would have made my year if the 8300 or the 8800 got a 5.0 OS

Keep those fingers crossed. None of us thought there would be a 5.0 OS for the 8330, either.

It's my understanding that you won't see any OS 5.0 released for the 8300, 8310, 8320, 8800, 8820

Downloading but will wait on the reviews. Rumor has it that BBM 4.7 is a part of this upgrade and BBM 5.0 is still a separate download.

When I first clicked on FB after installing 5.0.0.230, I was prompted to install FB 1.6.0.22. It seems to be working fine on this OS. Everything is refreshing, I'm getting updates, etc.

First thing that I noticed is it has threaded SMS. I am liking that a lot!

First impressions:

Phone seems to reboot a little faster, and has a nice reboot screen w/status bar (no more white screen w/spinning hourglass).
OS is noticeably faster and more responsive.
Menus are different in all system apps. Some things are in submenus, and menus have a more polished, rounded look.
3rd party themes (of course) no longer work.
SMS conversations are threaded.
Folder contents are now shown on a semi-transparent tab.
Profiles is now 'Sounds' app, and 'F' shortcut no longer works.
Volume options are now 1-10, silent and vibe. You can set length/count of vibe.
'Sounds' app has a better and easier to use menu system.
Alarm clock is now 'Clock' app, and 'R' shortcut no longer works.
Clock app looks like clock on outside of BB Flip when opened.
Bedside option is available.
Media player has a nicer interface.
Fast forward and rewind no longer move in chunks in the media player; you can move to any point in a song/video.
Photo interface pulls up all photos by default, and has a search bar at the top.
More font sizes are available in the browser.
Browser is NOT tabbed (disappointing).
There's a new Files app that's a file browser. Looks like it's meant for BES file sync, but it works fine for me as a device browser.

I had to re-download the following, but they worked fine once I did:

Facebook
Google Talk (RIM)
All Google apps

These apps worked fine without being reinstalled:

Pandora
Evernote
YouVersion Bible
Mobipocket Reader
BerryBuzz (had to type in reg code again after OS upgrade, had to be reconfigured)
SmartAlerts (had to type in reg code again after OS upgrade, had to be reconfigured)

These apps did not work after the upgrade:

BB App World
BBWeather
QuickPull Lite

Have you noticed a memory leak? This build seems to be large and take a lot of memory. I was down to 20Mb after the install and then looked again and found it at 15Mb. I did a battery pull and was back to 20Mb and didn't open any 3rd party apps and let it sit for about an hour and it dropped to 16Mb.

How we looking overall with this?

I'm downloading now.

Update: Read threw the 70+ page thread of Bull crap on CB.com..

My big questions..

1. Is the alarm app not working (I Live by that)
2. What's up with the media card (I got a lot of music on my Media Card)
3. How do 3rd party apps hold up so far? (Viigo, SocialScope, DTG, BeeJive)

Wow, I've been lurking here for so long and this is finally my first post.

Anyway, I downloaded and installed 5.0 for my 8330 on Verizon. I've been playing with it for about 5 hours now.

First impressions:
- Well, right off the bat the first thing I noticed is the new screen when you boot up the phone. It says "Blackberry" and has a progress bar. Kind of neat.

-The second thing I noticed, although small, is a huge annoyance to me. On the home screen, you can only scroll up and down with the trackball to move to different icons. If you scroll the trackball left and right nothing moves. However, you can go left and right when you bring up the full icon menu.

-Next, Threaded text messaging. Nice, yes. Also, it has smiley faces. Other than that, I don't find it really amazing. The only problem I have with it is some delay when I type. It can get mildly annoying.

-Moving on, the alarm function. Visually, it seems to be greatly improved. You have the option of an analog clock, digital, flip, or LCD digital. The options to customize it are greater, and it has the addition of a bedside mode. Also, a stopwatch and timer are new. The main problem I have with it is that the alarm is not functional (on my phone anyway). When I select the option to set the alarm, nothing happens. This is a bit of a problem for me, as my blackberry is what I use to wake up in the morning.

-On OS 4.5.169 (and other previous versions) there was just one icon that took you to all your media (pictures, videos, voice notes, etc.) now these all have their own individual icons.

-App world doesn't work.

-Viigo freezes whenever I try to start it. Battery pull is required to remedy this freeze.

-As stated, memory seems to come and go.

-OS seems a little more sluggish, typing, loading apps, bringing up menus, etc.

-Quickpull doesn't work

-New volume options, as stated by other users.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them. Ultimately, I think I'm going to be going back to 4.5.160 (cant stand the weird speaker screech of .169) As expected, this first incarnation of 5.0 on the 8330 is really buggy. I think it's a step in the right direction, and I will be eager to test future builds. But on some level I question if the 8330 has the hardware to be running 5.0 properly, such as on a Storm 2.

x2 ... I LOVE this feature.

Also - anyone notice the Call Alerts. You can now set customizable ring tones for people. This may have been avail in 4.x maybe I just saw it in 5.0

FWIW - my upgrade didn't go smooth - things locked up etc.

I ended up flashing my entire unit and reloading it ground up.

Anyone having trouble with GoogleSync?

The Alarm works for me. I went off this morning without a hitch.

My experiences are different from jumpo64.

First, the clock app woke me up on schedule this morning. It imported my old alarm settings during the OS install process, and it worked perfectly for me.

Second, I am able to scroll as before on the home screen. jumpo64, what theme are you using? Maybe that's the problem. Both L and Icon work fine scrolling side to side on the home screen. For me, anyway.

The OS seems much faster to me. My normal background apps are: Google Maps, Google Voice, Facebook, Mobipocket Reader. Maybe one of your background apps isn't playing nicely.

All that said, the memory issue looks like a borderline deal-breaker. Yesterday, over the course of 10 hours of normal use, I gradually went from 28.0 MB Free Space (Options > Memory) to 16.1 MB. I still can't figure out what specifically leaking. At times memory was going down when the phone was locked/asleep. In fact, it seemed to me to leak more when the phone was not in active use. Certain things did cause it to go back up some. For example, I noticed it go up about half a meg after I used Facebook (WTF). A reboot of the phone (as opposed to a battery pull) resets the memory back to its original 28.0 MB free, for me.

I believe a person would need to do daily phone resets in order to use this OS, so his phone memory would be reset back to normal levels. Is that an acceptable price to pay for the new functionality? You decide.

I'm installing it on one of my user's devices now (he likes to be a guinea pig).

I'm hoping it resolves the issue we've found with the 8330 and an IT Policy that forces encrypting the media card. When the user records a video, he cannot play that video on his device (and he just created it!).

It's a known issue per KB18827, but I'm hoping OS 5.0 fixes it.

It's being reported that if you have a VZW 8330, then BBMaps will not work. You get a sattelite lock but no maps are being displayed. Can anyone verify this since I use BB Maps frequently as a backup to my BT/GPS mapping programs.

I was able to install OS5.0 on a Bell Mobility 8330m. I used Desktop Software 5.0, and did not delete the vendor file. I have lost BBM, but am in the midst of getting it back. Good thing I backed up my contact list before attempting the upgrade.

I am reading everyones input to this new 5.0 operating system, and this is what I have encountered and believe. I have the Verizon 8330 curve and I found the 5.0 operating system to be moving very slow for me. I noticed on the top of my browser it said for the network 3g, but I was made to believe that the network always ran on a 3g network according to Verizon. One of the Reps. at Verizon after telling him that I believe your blackberry will run in slow mode if you have tons of programs on it, and he said it wasn't like a computer, I disagree, anyone care to lend your expertise to this concept? Oh by the way, I went back to 4.5 and loving the speed. Oh, by the way, the free navigation that Verizon gave out for blackberry maps is inop in 5.0

BBWeather not working is a deal breaker for me, thanks for posting that. I won't be upgrading until Tateu has a chance to upgrade BBWeather (bless that man!)

You decide.
When I installed the OS it imported my old alarm clock settings also. However, It didn't allow me to change it after that.

I can't scroll from left or right under multiple themes. Have to scroll up to go left, and down to go right.

Viigo freezing up the phone is really the major deal breaker for me. I use it constantly throughout the day in my down time.

Some other things I've noticed... Holding Q will switch your profile between Normal and Vibrate. Holding A will lock the device. K still works as a shortcut for Lock as well.

When placing the device on the cradle charger, I get a message saying there is insufficient power to charge the device, however, the device still charges in the cradle.
