I see this post was updated in March. Have there been any successes with the Nextel 7520 since that time?

All you gentlemen with more experience may be able to help me. I have an Inspiron 6000 that I can't get to work with my 7100t. I'm not sure, but I think it's due to my bluetooth card taking up COM 6, 7, 10-14, 20, 21 and my modem using 3. Any way to specify the com port for the RIM Virtual Serial Port to use?

Default 7100g Cingular Settings - 09-14-2005, 10:15 AM

I read through this entire forum trying different settings and configs, but none seemed to work. After a whole lot of 714 errors and some 734 errors I was able to get things working using this procedure:

(Stolen and re-edited from an earlier post)

Step 1 - Connect Your BlackBerry 7100g
Make sure your BlackBerry is connected by USB cable, and your BlackBerry Handheld Manager is running (just launch BlackBerry Desktop to run it.) This is necessary for using the BlackBerry as an external modem. You cannot use BlackBerry as a modem unless you have BlackBerry Handheld Manager running in the background!

Step 2- Verify Modem is Functioning Properly
Go to Control Panel -> Phone & Modem Options. In the Modems tab, you should see a new Standard Modem (it will not say BlackBerry so do not get confused) on a new port (such as COM3, COM6, COM7, etc.). Click Properties -> Diagnostics -> Query Modem. You should see the following on Windows 2000 (below, “OK” will be replaced with, “Success” on XP if you want to get real technical):
ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - BlackBerry IPmodem
AT+FCLASS=? - OK
AT#CLS=? - OK
AT+GCI? - OK
AT+GCI=? - OK
ATI1 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI2 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI3 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI4 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI5 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI6 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI7 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem

Step3 - IMPORTANT SPECIAL CONFIGURATION STEP
Click Properties -> Advanced and add the following extra initialization commands with the appropriate carrier-specific APN Setting (remember I’m an AT&T account on Cingular and therefore am using the AT&T setting):

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","proxy"

Step 4 - Add a New Internet Connection (some things are a little different on 2000 vs XP but pretty similar so try to follow what I have put here)
2000 - Close the Phone and Modem Options and the Control Panel. Create a new connection with Start -> Connect To -> Show all connections -> Create a new connection; or
XP - Close the Phone and Modem Options and the Control Panel. Create a new connection with Start -> Settings -> Network Connections -> New Connection Wizard.
1. Click Next
2. Select "Connect To The Internet" then Next
3. Select "Set up my connection manually" then Next
4. Select "Connect using a dial-up modem" then Next.
5. Check only the Standard Modem (if prompted).
6. Give the connection a name such as "BlackBerry Modem", then Next.
7. On the next screen, pick one of the following phone numbers, depending on your AT&T/Cingular phone enter phone number *99***1#
8. Click Next.
9. On the next screen,

Username: [email address]
Password: CINGULAR1

I DID NOT DO THE FOLLOWING STEP. (IN FACT I REMOVED THIS ENTRY THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY THERE DURING TESTING. LEAVE BLANK TO START AND CHANGE IF YOU CANNOT CONNECT BY NAME.

Step 5 – Configure DNS for Cingular
1. Go to Start->Settings -> Network Connections
2. Right-click your BlackBerry Internet icon, select Properties.
3. A window will open. Click the Networking tab.
4. Click TCP/IP Settings and then Click the Properties Button
5. Select "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
6. Enter Preferred DNS server: 66.209.10.201; and Alternate DNS server: 66.209.10.202

After following all of these procedures I starting getting 734 Errors. I knew I was on the right track as without the proper config I was getting 714 Errors. The only way I was able to clear the 734 was to turn off the BB completely (yikes! first time I had to do that!). After the reboot and Cingular GPRS network sync the notebook was able to connect without errors.

Connecting this way is certainly slow, but definitely usable. I hope this helps. This is a great forum and there are many knowledgeable people here that I was able to piece this together from. Thanks everyone, for all your help, and keep up the good work! (Anyone know when the Edge enabled RIM drivers will be available for the 7100gs?)
Cheers!

Smile success with blackberry 7290 - Cingular service - 09-18-2005, 12:08 AM

I just want to thank the author of this thread and all the contributors. I read through the thread once and was able to connect my blackberry within 90 minutes despite a couple of challenges. I am describing my steps again (hopefully redundancy might help someone less technical or in a similar boat as me).

(copied and re-editied from an earlier post)

My Configuration:
Blackberry Model #: 7290
Laptop: IBM T42p
OS: windows 2000 server
Blackberry service provider: Cingular (actually i was told by cingular support that even though my blackberry Device shows Cingular on the home screen my account still belongs to the legacy ATT network.

Step 1:
Connect the blackberry to laptop - Make sure your BlackBerry is connected by USB cable, and your BlackBerry Handheld Manager is running (just launch BlackBerry handheld managers) This is necessary for using the BlackBerry as an external modem.

Click Properties -> Advanced and add the following extra initialization commands with the appropriate carrier-specific APN Setting (I’m an AT&T account on Cingular and therefore the cingular settings specified above in this thread did not work for me and I got Error 734.) I used the following setting to make it work finally.

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","proxy"

Step 4 - Add a New Internet Connection (some things are a little different on 2000 vs XP but pretty similar so try to follow what I have put here)
2000 - Close the Phone and Modem Options and the Control Panel. Create a new connection with Start -> Connect To -> Show all connections -> Create a new connection; or
1. Click Next
7. On the next screen, pick one of the following phone numbers, depending on your AT&T/Cingular phone enter phone number *99#
8. Click Next.
9. On the next screen,

Username:
Password:

I left the username and password blank as technically i am still on the ATT legacy network even though the device shows cingular on the home screen.

I did not have ot worry about the BES setting or DNS setting.

Once i changed cingular settings over to ATT settings the error 734 went away and I was abvle to connect at sweet 115.2kbps. No reboot was needed on either device.
BTW, i do not have a data plan and will be charged 1.95 cents per kkilobyte of data if I used the account. I do not plan to use it without getting the right plan for this ogtherwise i will get killed with the bill if browsed at this rate.I just wanted to get it to work once.

Cheers!

Thanks.

when I use my i730 as a modem it has no username or pass unless the bb is looking for the user name and pass that you use for your desktop manager

Default 7100t (t-mobile) as modem - 09-19-2005, 03:49 PM

Hi all,
I'm very new here. I just purchased a new laptop and I'd like to use my 7100T with T-Mobile as a modem. I've been syncing with my desktop so I don't currently have any Blackberry software on my notebook. I'm guessing I should install to CD that came with my phone onto my laptop??? I'm not sure how to get started here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a completely unrelated note, I would love a referral to a hardware that could sync my new bluetooth enabled laptop to my desktop Outlook wirelessly.

thank you,
~Steph

Default 7100r errors - 09-21-2005, 11:11 AM

Hello all
I guess this thread is old and maybe not checked anymore. But I am having a really hard time getting my 7100r to work as a modem. I have followed the forum instructions word for word numerous times, and still seem to get a 718 error when trying to connect. I am using rogers wireless in canada with a 7100r version blackberry with version 4.0 on it, and version 4.0 desktop software. Any help would be great!

Thumbs up Works with T-Mobile - 09-22-2005, 06:03 PM

Dell Laptop
Blackberry 7100t

I followed the instructions in the first post and it works perfectly.

I did some non-scientific speed checks and I seem to get somewhere between 40-100 kbps. It feels like dial up.

I am excited to use this while I travel for the occassion when I can't find a hot spot and need to sync up my corp e-mail. In the past I have considered getting a dial up ISP account as a back up but just couldn't justify the limited use. Besides, getting a laptop connected to a public phone is a real pain. The other option I looked into today was EvDO with Verizon and Sprint. Even though they have lowered their price to $60 per month, it still seems quite expensive to me. I also was dissappointed with their coverage areas. The only place you can get the EvDO is in the major metro areas. I usually can find a hotspot in those situations, so I am not sure it would really help my situation.

Just to prove my point, I am using my 7100t connection now to submit this post.

Would I want to use it all the time? No way. Just a nice back up for me when I am on the road.

Hi, I have the 7250 from Bell.

The Modem drivers didn't come with it. Where can I download them?

Please and thank-you.

Default success 7100t and T-Mobile - 09-28-2005, 07:57 PM

After many hours of work....finally...got it working...slow as molasses in winter though :(

I am using a Dell D600 with all sorts of kaywrap installed, its a work machine. I did two things to get the modem to finally show up in teh phone and modems area of the control panel...using windows 2000.
1) uninstalled all BB software and removed all Research In Motion entries in the registry just to be sure
2) I shut off all non needed services in windows. This included virus scan tools as well as various other things my company installs, marimba, novel, etc.
After that I re-installed the BB software and voila!

Default 7290 on o2 - 09-29-2005, 06:09 AM

I'm based in London, UK, using a 7290 on o2. Going to be in Florence next week and the tethered modem would be unbelievably useful. Anyone succeeded with o2 (and forgive the ignorance -- assuming a successful setup with o2, will it roam with an o2 configuration in Italy, or would I need a separate config for the Italian network?)
Many thanks

I have a blackberry 7520 w/ Nextel service...I run Windows XP on an IBM T43 Laptop and am trying to get it connected to the internet through my BB. When I try to add the BB as a modem by pointing to the "c:\program files\common files\research in motion\modem drivers" I get an error saying that there is no information specific to my device in there. The CAT, SYS and INF files are in there, so it should work. Has anyone gotten the 7520 on yet?

Also, perhaps I could use bluetooth to share the internet? I have only been able to have my laptop sync as a headset thus far. ANY and ALL help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

The BB bluetooth will only work with a headset or a keyboard, and some people have synched it with the laptop for voice i believe but not 100% sure. However I do not believe you can use it for synch with laptop for internet modem use.

It is another file go to the Cingular site and download it from there look for a file that will say Handheld Software, I Use Verizon so I do not have the link but if you go to your providers site you should be able to find it there under support download software or something close to that. Once you have it make sure your BB is connected via USB and install it.

all I can find is this, https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...E4F82F9F00E7D4 but it seems that it giving me the Handheld software (Operating System) that's not what I want? right?

Yes that is the place, drop the menu and select the 4th one down if you have the 7290, if you dont pick the right one for your phone.
