Need help configuring 7100G as modem

Hey guys.

Have read all the info regarding using the 7100 as a modem on Cingular, but having a problem finding the BES configuration that needs to be changed. Can anyone point me to where on the BES I can find the setting for IPModem? I've looked everywhere. I am running BES 4.0, so according to the threads I've read, I should see it.

Thanks

Cingular and the 7290 - works, sort of

Well, I got it to work with the help of a Cingular tech. rep.

The only change to any of the information posted here was the advanced modem init. string. I was told to use: AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","proxy"
I don't think that I've seen that string posted here before. I was still using the WAP@ sign-on and password. When I used the init. string posted here all I got was a 734 error.

There is also a special number at Cingular that deals with Blackberries and "data" related stuff. the number is: 800-552-3373. Note, that these are not the guys that helped me get it working. I was referred to them only when I started asking about billing. One of their automated options is even about using a Blackberry as a modem - I almost fell out of my chair when I got to that one!!

They said that even with an Unlimited Data plan, using the Blackberry as a laptop modem wouldn't be covered and each Kbyte would be billable. They also said that there wasn't a plan that covered use of the blackberry as a modem and they had no plans to create one. Now, they also said that even though it was billable it probably woudn't show up on your account as a charge, but "may" in the future. How's that for a specific answer? I've talked with over 6 different people/groups/supervisors at Cingular now about this and this guy/group is the only one that thinks that the modem use isn't covered under the unlimited data plan, but that they just don't happen to be actually billing it right now. They were very nice and offered to sell me an additonal plan to use a card in the laptop for an additonal $79 a month, however. Thank you for using Cingular...

Hope that this helps somebody. Thanks for all of the help here!!!

BES Setting for Modem

It is something like "Disable IP Modem". the default is to false, so it should be on unless you do something to turn it off (I mean on - I just love double negatives). I found it for our IS guys by pulling down the pdf documentation and searching for "Modem" - there weren't that many hits so it didn't take long.

Hope that this helps.

No Com 6???

If Someone can help me , It would be much appreciated. I have t mobile. I was on the phone with them for an hour or so. The tech gave up trying when my computer would not recognize the Blackberry as a com 6 port. I have 4 and 5 there already , but my laptop is not recognizing the blackberry as a modem in com 6. This was the final straw for the tech and he told me to come here!!!!! Go Figure. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks Mike

Mike, I'm not sure this is the correct spot for you to post that, it's called thread jacking.

BUT, you can try reloading the OS, and see if that helps.

It's a driver issue. When you install BB Desktop on your windoze box, you get a driver that can recoginze a BB. I've been trying to get the USB driver on the linux partition of my laptop to see the BB for a couple weeks, with no luck. If you (we) are lucky, someone will find the hack to make this work. BB has a very secure bluetooth stack, so you (we) are not gonnna get in that way.

So, if I need to tether, I hold my nose and boot the windoze partition. Of coures, if I think I may need to do that before I travel, I make sure my virus/spyware/gatesbugs updates are current.

um, i have an idea :-) send me the modem driver, and il putz with it :-) hehe i think i know how i can make this work-at least for a mac :-)

dulcamara 05-08-2005 08:29 AM

I will if I can find the source, which is not looking likely.

My hacking skills are nowhere near up to this task. All I get when I ask are pointers to

Success with T-Mobile in the UK. Add modem initialization string of +cgdcont=1,"IP","general.t-mobile.uk". Phone number is *99# with username "user" and password "pass". I had to ask T-Mobile (UK) to add general.t-mobile.uk to my account before it worked. Be aware that this data transfer is not part of your Blackberry data allowance, so weighs in at 7.50 per Mb or you can take out a monthly allowance.

Actually it's a plus - Bluetooth drains your battery while the USB cable keeps it charged!

I have tried everything listed on this site, and called Cingular to be told it is not supported. I have a 7100G with the BB unlimited plan. I have been told that data connect or media net is extra. I get error 734 everytime I try to connect. I assume the problem is with my plan. Any ideas??

mcculleyc 05-09-2005 09:51 AM

This can be done with Cingular, but you can waste a lot of time doing it. My pitiful, but successful, story is at

http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-blackberry-discussion/7645-success-cingular-tcp-ip-wap-cingular.html

Bottom line: 10+ phone calls which averaged 1hr each

Once you get an ssh client to work, you're set with Cingular. Now you gotta get the drivers figured out.

mcculleyc 05-09-2005 11:06 AM

Has anyone got it to work through the blackberry.net apn instead of wap.cingular. If so then we probably don't have to sign up for the media plan.

Newbie here, so pls be patient...

Great forum, thanks to all for the hard work and all the useful information.

I have a 7290 on T Mobile UK and after many hits and misses, (loosely based on the T Mobile US configuration) I managed to connect to the modem (ie I have an enabled connection going in my taskbar) but cannot surf or do anything with it... checking on the status, I see packets being sent but nothing received...

I guess it could be reported as a "success" but.. so near and yet so far! can anyone help? Where am I going wrong?

Thanks!

Edit: Just checked my Desktop Manager version and it's 3.6.3.11 ...could this be the problem?

mcculleyc 05-09-2005 01:07 PM

I signed up for MediaNet Unlimited and 30 seconds later it worked!! What does anybody think about cancelling the BB plan and using just MediaNet with a 3rd party email add on?

Its in the IT Admin Policy settings, just a checkbox, default is "TRUE" so you shouldn't have to mess with anything on the BES.
