Thanks SR. Re-installed everything, started the Desktop Manager, then connect the handheld and it seems to work now. I also noted that the "Use IP header compression" keeps resetting to enabled.

So, it looks like (to me) that this is an actual supported service from -in my case- Cingular?
We have a number of folks that are looking at a Salesforce.com deployment, and state that the BB integration isn't enough, so they need cellular cards for their laptops. I think this would be a much better solution, considering we're already paying for an unlimited data plan.
The question for us would be is this indeed a supported solution...? If so, then we can offer it to our users instead of setting up a new cellular contract for each person.

Blackberry as a modem -
07-24-2006, 04:35 PM
I followed your instructions on setting up my Blackberry as a modem. I have a 7130c. I thought I had things set up but once I dial the number, things looked like they were going to work, but once it attempts to register with the network, I get the following error message:
TCP/IP CP reported error 736 The remote computer terminated the control protocol.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I have a company issued Blackberry 7250 on a BES server with a unlimited data plan. The carrier is Verizon. I get the error message 691: Access was denied becaouse the username and/or password was invalid on the domain. I called Verizon they told me I need to get the tethered solution package at a cost of $15.00. I checked with my company they said no, I even offered to pay the $15.00 they still said no. Got any ideas. My BB has a internet icon on the desktop and I can serf the net with it if you call it that. Is there a way to get XP pro to see the BB as something other than a modem to access the internet?

Hi,
I also have an 8700g and couldn't get it to work until I blanked out the +cdgcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com" string from my Control Panel > Modem > Properties > Advanced "Extra initialization commands".
Try leaving that blank and then it should work!
If that doesn't work then...
you might want to be sure your Desktop Manager is the very latest version (as of today it's 4.1.1.19 - Feb 24 2006) - To download it, do a Google.com search for "Blackberry Desktop Manager" and you'll be able to find it. Get "Service Pack 1 (English)"
Hope that helps!

EasyMethod: Install Blackberry Desktop 4.1 has modem in it -
08-07-2006, 10:13 PM
Nextel told me to download 4.1 blackberry desktop and the servicepack for blackberry and it automatically has the modem in it. Of course they did say you have to configure your browser and messenger proxies. Modem service is only for dial up use, so you'd use phone minutes and need a dial up provider as well.
Just go to blackberry.com, hit personal life at bottom, then software and desktop or internet solutions icon should take you right to it.
I just went to internet options, connections, dial up and set proxies to localhost and 3128 I think. I did not try it out, because I wasnt going to waste money on dial up or my phone minutes when I have data package on my phone.
Nextel has a portable modem for car, home, office for 249.00 and plans starting at 50.00 (am sure thats very limited) but I will try that. Sprint is with Nextel, but their wireless pc card would require me to go through another credit check, pay 99.00 for the pccard and then pay like 80.00 to get an unlimited service.
I am looking to replace my cable internet as they are being taken over by AOL Time Warner which means all prices will rise and they might restrict freedoms we have now on cable (my opinion) so I am not dealing with that, lol
I wish they would make an anywhere unlimited data plan for the laptop costing about 50.00 a month?
Thanks,
Crissy

Check out the data card with T-Mobile!! Their data card service is inexpensive and includes hot spot access as well as use nationally and internationally (if you travel). Data card is $149.99. Service is $49.99 if you don't already have T-Mobile service.

By the way, that's for unlimited internet service on your laptop with hotspot access as well, which is included in that $49.99.

Hi,
we have found the following,
The double quote was not recognized by the modem. the corrcet one is on the right side.
The following example is for Luxgsm in Luxembourg.
AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,web.pt.lu <> AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP", "web.pt.lu"

I believe with Verizon that you have to pay for additional services in order to use the BlackBerry as a modem. Any VZW customers around to verify that?

Thanks. I tried the Shark Modem and it works but it is very slow. Do you know anything about that and if you do, what is the advantages of actually buying the software instead of just using the trial version?

Shark Modem via BES "VS" Native TCP IP Modem -
08-16-2006, 04:15 PM
I have read all of the posts and I am still not too clear on the charge to the data plan. Is there going to be extra charges for data if the user do not have the Blackberry connect unlimited either thought they have unlimited blackberry Data.
Does anyone get extra data charges on the Cingular network without the Blackberry connect plan?
I was able to configure a 8700c Cingular Blue(AT&T) sim card and it got connect without any of the WIX items.
I am just afraid that there are extra charges.
What about using Shark Modem via the BES MDS server? Will that by-pass the Cingular data network restrictions? If the Shark Modem using direct TCP IP, then will that get extra charges as well?
Please clarify before my shocking bill show up. Thanks.

I tried the same within Germany with the following config and setups and it works great:
The environment:
Device: 8700
Provider: T-Mobile
Mail via BES 4.0
LapTop XP Prof SP1
Just follow the settings for T-Mobile USA
Only difference is item 8. Special config steps enter:
+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet.t-mobile"
Its working. Thanks a lot.

Does anyone know how to export the RAS connection out easily to other users? Back in the NT days, it used to be rasphone.ini, but I think it is all registry based now. Has anyone tried this?

Verizon Login? -
08-24-2006, 12:08 AM
I use Verizon Wireless and a 7130e. I successfully installed the Shark Modem. I got it to dial VZW as well. The BB displays "Modem Mode Enabled" and the phone switches to 1x from 1XEV. However, I keep getting Error 691 username or password is invalid on the domain. I have tried both vzw and my 10 digit phone number as my password. I am provisioned through a B2B account with unlimited data. Any advice?
Also, is VZW still offering tether for one month free? I am just trying it out to see if I use it often.

Does anyone know if I use Shark Modem and have the Blackberry configure to use MDS--will bypass the extra data charge? Since all data is going via the BES network? Does anyone know?

7130e Tethered Modem Issue -
09-06-2006, 06:45 PM
I've installed several VZAccess managers to use tethered modem. Today I spent over an hour with support. Can't completed VZAccess install. I receive the following error message, 'Unable to create new connection - Error 711', after entering the mobile number in the VZAccess Wizard.
Verizon TSupport said it was a registry problem, and I should review some Microsoft document....seems like an odd response to me.
Perhaps I need to dig into the dialup settings?
