I have a recently signed up 8700c w/Cingular service. I presume since it was signed up recently, it must be "orange", however, I had to use wap.cingular to get it to connect. I connect, and get an IP, however I don't seem to have any connectivity:

As you can see, I can connect, and have connectivity to a PPP server, but can't seem to leave the immediate network. I have the unlimited data plan. Is there something I need to enable for this to work? What am I missing?

Ok my modem connects but when i lauch IE on my laptop, no web page loads. I am doing this on the blackberry pearl

I'm getting an error 736 message. Any ideas?

Update: Disregard... Resolved the error message by updating the init string:

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

I have an 8100 on T mobile and have been going crazy trying to get it to sync with my powerbook g4. I have read countless forums and have seen that some have had luck, but their methods have not worked for me. T mobile is absolutely no help.

Pocketmac 4.0 starts but never completes a sync session. HELP PLEASE!!

I had the exact same issue, made the above change, and now I get on fine. Seems to work great although I don't have full EDGE service where I am testing it now so I hope its faster in other locations. Feels like about a 26k right now although it says 115k.

I am using a Blackberry 8700c on Cingular. Here is what I found for those of you still having trouble:

1. You do need this thread, not the one listed above:
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

2. You DO NOT NEED to call Cingular to have them add all those line items to your bill. (at least I didn't)

So, let me get this straight. You have finally figured out how to successfully use a Nextel BlackBerry as a tethered modem, something that NO ONE ELSE on these forums has been able to do after just about 2 YEARS of trying, and you don't even have the decency to post that info on this thread for others to see?

Besides, speaking only for myself, and I am unanimous in this, the ability to use my BB 7520 as a tethered modem is now a moot point. Sprint has taken the best cell phone network I've ever used (best at meeting my personal needs, that is... I'm not trying to speak for anyone else) and they've degraded it to the point where it now gives the same "quality" of service that Sprint's network is infamous for. It's now unreliable as hell! I'm getting way too many dropped calls and calls that simply don't go through, something that never used to happen when Nextel was actually NEXTEL, not Sprint! So, I'm done. Within the next couple weeks, I'll be buying a BB 8703e on Verizon. Assuming it works where I need it to work, when I need it to work, the way that I need it to work, I will then port my phone # from Sprint Nextel over to Verizon, and Sprint can kiss my arse!

P.S. BTW, if you'd made your post about 6 months earlier, I might've actually emailed you, because 6 months ago I actually wanted to use my 7520 as a wireless modem. But at that time, no one had reported any luck in getting it to work. *shrugs*

I have an 8100 Pearl.

With a fresh install of Desktop Manager and the following settings:
Standard Modem
+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

Dial: *99#

I was successful. But only once. If I disconnect and try to reconnect I get:
"All devices connected.

Error 50: The request is not supported."

any thoughts??

quick update:

instead of un-installing/re-installing everything, I tried rebooting the computer.

When I tried again, I received an error (762?) saying the computer and the remote computer could not agree on a PPP. I remembered that one setting people were playing with was "use IP header compression" which is under the heading "PPP Link." (Settings->Network Connections->T-Mobile GPRS->Properties->Networking->Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)->Properties->Advanced)

I unchecked this box. Back to Error 50. Rebooted again. Now it works but only till I disconnect. then I have to reboot again.

Any thoughts?

p.s. I am with T-Mobile on the EDGE network.

I am a new user to my Blackberry 7130e. I am on the sprint network. I am trying to download voice tones to my phone and keep getting an http 405 or 406 error that says: The page you are trying to load is not supported by the browserl Please try loading a different page.

I have successfully downloaded one ringtone from Jamster but have not been able to use any of the other ringtone services I have used in the past. Can someone please assist and let me know if there is a setting that needs to be changed etc.

New Sprint 7130e user here and thanks to all who contributed for the great instruction on getting the BB up and running as a modem. I was a little concerned when it didn't work right away but paging down a few threads was the sage advice "must have desktop manager running" - worked after that!!!

Has anyone tried to use a BB for on-line gaming?

Ok i need some help. I've got an T-Mobile 8700g and I cant seem to get the modem installed. Ive tried re-installing the desktop manager and still have no luck. I can see my RIM Virtual Serial Ports in the device manager and when i go to add the modem i only have Standard Modem>Communications cable between two computers and parallal cable between two computers. I've made sure that IPModem is enabled on my BES and I still cant seem to get the modem installed. Anyone have any ideas? thanks

I just installed the software on another PC and i was able to get the standard modem this time. I tried to remove all the software from my PC and reinstall again but I still cant get the modem to appear on this PC. Anyone have any luck getting the modem to install when it didnt the first few times?

I am thinking about getting a 7130e from US Cellular. I asked the rep and he said they do not support tethering. Does anyone know if any 3rd party apps will support this like SharkModem etc? I see no references to US Cellular any where.

If you have the Japan NTT Docomo Blackberry solution then IP Modem functionality is possible.
Following instructions are for non-techs that want to give it a go:-

Must have the Blackberry driver installed to detect it as a modem. Will have one of the higher available COM ports.
Must have the Blackberry Desktop Manager software installed.

Must subscribe to the “Mopera U light plan”. Contact docomo to it added to your contract. It costs 300 yen monthly. (FYI There is also an email MOpera plan at 500 monthly which is the same thing with an email address).
You will not get this Mopera service as standard when ordering a blackberry!

Find the blackberry modem in control panel.

View Properties ->Advanced.
Extra Settings:
“Extra Initialization Commands.”
Add this line exactly as it looks(technically you don’t need the ‘at’).
at+cgdcont=1,"IP","mopera.net"

Then create a new network connection as a standard dial up modem.
Select your BB modem and name the connection accordingly.

No ID or password is required.(My preference is to set the password to blank. Otherwise it may grab your PC login ID.)

Number to Dial is:

*99#

Must have the Desktop Manager Software running when using the BB as an IP Modem.

Thanks to the originator of the instructions and all the posters updating information. I just purchased an 8100 on Cing Orange, followed the instructions (modified with the "wap.cingular") and it works GREAT. I have BES UNL, so I hope it won't show up as a $1,000 bill!!

I was wondering though, I had previously done something like this on my Treo and when using "wap.cingular", the Username was then WAP@ rather than ISPDA@.

Below are instructions I found that are similar to what I used before my BB:

Connection Name: whatever you want i named mine wap.cingular
Modem: bluetooth dialup modem
Phone number: *99***1# (turn dialing rules off)
Username:
Password: CINGULAR1
**click advanced tab**
Baud rate: whatever i use 19200
uncheck wait for dial tone before dialing
Extra dial string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR" (case sensitive and that is an O not a zero)

I just got my Pearl from Cingular (Philadelphia, PA area) and, thanks to the instructions here, I was able to set it up as a cellular modem! I'm posting this while connected thru the Pearl

I travel for work several times a year and, since my company wouldn't foot the bill for my new BB (not 100% travel) and wouldn't let me on the corporate BES with my own device, this will make it possible for me to tunnel into my corp network to access my emails while in airports and coffee shops.

I REALLY enjoy this phone, It's the best phone I've ever owned. I put BestSkinsEver protection on it (great product) and ordered the case from RIM (great case).

Blackberry is now also working in Pakistan with calibration of Mobilink.

I was unable to connect through from BB for internet from my PC.

This forum help to get connect.

As Mr. Mark in first post to this thread has mention the way to connect through from most popular cellular companies of Europe. I would like to add method for Mobilink Pakistan.
Just by a minor change in extra initialization command. It will be as follow:-

+cgdcont=1,"IP","connect.mobilinkworld.com"

Fallowing the same producer as Mark has already stated. Id, password and dialing number will be:-

ID: mobilink
PASSWORD: mobilink
DAILING NUMBER: *99#


Now you can enjoy the services of blackberry with your PC's too.
