Success - T-Mobile talked me through it - I ended up deleting and reinstalling the modem and it worked. 19.2 KPBS connection but I didnt have a very good signal.
I have to say this is a very cool feature.

Yep they guy took me through the entire process and even had the init string needed. He said "This is a new feature we have just added". Damn near fell off my chair. From totally blocked ports and denial to "Hey check out the cool modem type feature" In two weeks.

I have the 7250, XP and DM 4.0 running. Just tried and I couldn't even get the modem recongnized by XP. Tried manually installing and still no dice. I was able to get my Smartphone (Verizon) connected to my laptop a while back so not sure if this is my issue or Verizon has deny access to the modem functionality which I heard in another forum.

After installing the new Desktop software and such for my 7510 I saw that a new Standard Modem was added on COM3. Like others, XP won't ever see it when I do diagnostics.
I have several questions about this. First, I removed the modem while I was fiddling around with some settings and now I don't think I have it added back in correctly. I tried adding a Standard Modem back on COM3, but my choices are for specific speed modems like 33.6 or 56k, etc. So I added a Standard 56k Modem on COM3, but now the Hardware ID is different when I go to diagnostics (it shows moto1_gen). Before it showed something like genmdm or something, I forget.
Any way to get it back to what BB installed without reinstalling all the software?
Next, I was fiddling around with the BB Handheld Manager and I was playing with Handheld Connection settings. I ended up enabling COM10 and COM11 at various times which now has consumed those ports. When I try to Disable them I either get a blue screen of death or else the computer just freezes with no blue screen.
All that in an attempt to have my 7510 work as a modem, oh well. Any ideas?
Thanks,
David

Nextel 7520 -
02-16-2005, 10:01 AM
I say we take up a collection to pledge to the first person to get the nextel 7520. I think the incentive will be the motivation to decipher the problem. I pledge $10 via paypal to the first posted solution. Any other Nextel 7520's care to join me???

After upgrading Desktop Manager to Version 4, 7100g gets recognized and responds as a standard modem. Have been getting nowhere with customer support at Cingular however to get the required services to my account. Still getting 734 error.
Most recently received the following from BB Support at Cingular:
"...As for using the device as a modem, you would need to add a "Laptop Connect" package to your account. The features mentioned in your email are no longer offered, so I am unable to add them to your account. The current laptop connect packages are as follows:
$24.99 10 MB $.006/KB
$34.99 20 MB $.004/KB
$44.99 50MB $.002/KB
$74.99 Unlimited N/A
You may reply to this email to let me know which package you would like added to your account."
Needless to say this is not the solution I had hoped for...
Anyone having any luck recently with the folks at Cingular on this subject?

OK, the way I see it we have pledges of $30 to the first tech to get the 7520 functioning as a modem for a laptop connection. Lets get it to $100. To pledgors, remember your "word is your bond" and we must make good on this to attract real talent.

Quick: Need modem drivers -
02-17-2005, 11:49 AM
I'm out of town and don't have my BB CD with me. I am using a new Laptop and I installed the desktop software from TMO's link (not from the CD). Therefore, I don't have a folder under Prog Files/RIM/ that has anything to do with a modem.
Is there a way that I can download the modem driver and install on my laptop? Anyone have a link?

I thought I posted this already, but I don't see it...
BB 7290
Net: Rogers Wireless
Desktop: 4.0
BB OS: 4.0
PC OS: XP Home
No BES/No MDS
BB Modem: booya!
This took a little playing around. I finally deleted the Network connection and the "Standard Modem" rebooted everything, and installed a new "Standard 56K modem".
I re-registered, requested new service books, ensured the proper APN (internet.com for my network). I rebooted pretty much after each new item. This should be entirely uncecesary, but I didnt feel like getting to the end and then wondering if it would have worked had I rebooted...
Voila! I'm back online with the BB Modem on my 7290 4.0

do you have Desktop Manager running when doing the query? if not, thats your issue.

Newbie question: Seeing that some are having trouble getting the 7100g to work as a modem, typically are the more problems with this if you buy directly from Cingular versus someone like eaccess? I know Cingular has temporarily suspended selling them, but for this question assume that they are offering them currently.

Excellent to know. That's identical to the string that is mentioned in my FAQ.
Did you have to do anything different from this FAQ, in order for the modem to successfully work?

At the moment, there is no Nextel success reports yet so far. There's a modem built into the 7250, but I don't think Nextel has enabled it yet.
You may wish to try to download the latest version of the PC-bsaed PacketStream Gold/Pro software from Nextel, and see if it finally works with the BlackBerry yet.

7730 as modem -
02-23-2005, 11:15 AM
Anyone tried the 7730? I got stuck on the first step: locating the modem drivers, as these won't come with the unit. I have checked the installation directory and CD. grrrrrrr...
May other models' drivers be compatible with it? Shall we give it a try? I don't have them, so I'd need somebody to send me these, and we could take it from there.

groobo,
7730 does NOT have modem capability. It is not possible.
A list of supported BlackBerry models are listed near the top of this BlackBerryModem FAQ.
oam,
You may need to install a different version of BlackBerry desktop (i.e. 4.0.0.33 or 4.0.0.23 instead of 4.0.0.30 if that is what you have, for example). Uninstall the BlackBerry drivers from Device Manager, and reinstall.

being tied to usb is wack.. anyone gotten this to work over bluetooth? I do this all the time on my t68i, but was given a bb by my job and am wondering if upgrading to the 7290 w/ bluetooth would give me the same freedom i have with the t68i (which i would cancel if it works since i also was given a nextel phone as well and i can't carry so many gadgets at once)

Not possible to do modem over Bluetooth on a Blackberry yet at this time. This is due to the Bluetooth limits that RIM put on BlackBerries, mainly due to security reasons (especially OBEX is a big no-no).
Although, bluetooth serial profiles appear to be possible on BlackBerry. This may be possible in the future though, possibly using a third party software program. (It is reported Bluetooth GPS was successfully achieved on BlackBerry, which means serial profiles are technically possible, and a software-based bluetooth virtual modem router might possibly be programmed.) Possible project for some enterprising BlackBerryOS 4.0 developer, maybe?

Here are my notes:
1. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers are
not modem drivers. These are merely drivers (quite poor ones at that - see #4) that install a virtual COM port to interface with your Blackberry thru the modem set up by the Blackberry Desktop Manager installation program. You don't need to install these manually. If you deleted/lost/whatever your Standard Modem entry, reinstall or repair the Desktop Manager software.
I'm currently working on making this easier to fix/do manually without
toying with the PIA software.
2. BB Desktop Manager must bind to your BB at least once in the duration
it has been connected, complete it's sync tasks, and be in a connected
state before IpModem communication is possible.
3. Basic IpModem communication (eg. diagnostic display) has been tested
and is known to work on 3.8.x (all public) & 4.0.x (all public) OSes using Desktop Manager 4.0.0.33 (strangely missing now) and 4.0.0.30 on
Windows XP SP2.
4. The virtual COM port drivers do not support suspend/hibernation properly, requiring a reboot to restore functionalities when coming out of these states! Although I haven't fully tested suspend support, I can verify the COM port breaks upon restoration from a hibernate. This is very bad.
Hope that helps, will provide more info if/when I receive more.

More 7100t goodness:
Diagnostics output
Code:
ATQ0V1E0 - OK
AT+GMM - BlackBerry IPmodem
AT+FCLASS=? - OK
AT#CLS=? - OK
AT+GCI? - OK
AT+GCI=? - OK
ATI1 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI2 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI3 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI4 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI5 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI6 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI7 - Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
You can enable the following without problems:
- Enable hardware flow control
- Enable modem error control
- Enable modem compression
I've also been successful in connecting at the highest available COM port speed (921600bps) although this is likely just the speed between the modem and the virtual COM port.

I have tried to use the 7520 from Nextel. I used all of the specs that were given, and was able to query the modem. I was not able to finish dialing out though. Hangs on Verifying username and password. Then times out. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

OK. I'm completely baffled.
I'm on Cingular with a 7290. Finally decided to Upgrade and downloaded the Roger's version. Everything is working great, including BT to Jabra 250. My only problem is the Modem portion. :(
I can't find anything that resembles:
C:\program files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers
anywhere!
What am I doing wrong?
I've got, in the RIM folder:
AppLoader
RIMDeviceManager
Shared
USB Drivers
Please help!

I put some thought into this and I'm not sure it would work at this time. I've looked through the RIM JDE 4.0 API's and many of them, including the Bluetooth API, require signed code by RIM to work on an actual phone. The actual wording is this:
public final class BluetoothSerialPort
extends IOPort
Provides access to the Bluetooth Serial Port profile.
Category:
Signed: This element is only accessible by signed clients. If you intend to use this element, please contact RIM to establish the necessary agreements that will allow you to have your COD files signed. Signing is only required for use on the device, development under the JDE can occur without signing the CODs.
So if you wanted to code using the Bluetooth API you would have to work out an agreement with RIM first. As long as RIM plans on eventually opening up Bluetooth to more than Headsets that's fine, but if not you might be coding for nothing. Also if RIM plans to have this functionality eventually they might just add it into the OS which would make any coding for it obselete.
Of course I could be wrong and I'm very tempted to look into this anyway, if I do I will keep you updated. I just ordered my 7520 today so I'm hyped to start programming for it.

As far as I know, it costs $100 to get the signing key -- hopefully you will be be able to do this, however, RIM may object due to security reasons. You may convince them that you will be encrypting your connectoin, so that it's far more secure than OBEX, because it would require your proprietary software on both ends of the connection. Then again it may be just a simple purchase
However, RIM let somebody use the signing key on the free BlackChat ICQ open-source program...so RIM is letting development run more rampant than they used to.
It's true that maybe RIM is a bit more picky about the Bluetooth serial profile than for an open source program that 'hooks' into the RIM API's. You'll have to find out if this is the case...

Assuming you're using XP, under Phone/Modem options, do you have a Standard Modem entry? If so, don't worry about the missing folder. If not, reinstall the Blackberry Desktop Manager software -- It should automatically reinstall the missing modem device (3.8x and up)
