Default 7520 on Nextel? - 06-05-2005, 02:17 PM

Hi kids,

Was just wondering if anyone had done any more research on the Nextel 7520 and how far they had gotten in getting it to work as a modem. I know thus far there's been a lot of difficulty, but I wanted to see if anyone could at least get it to respond when queried, etc.

Thanks for the FAQ, any tweaks to maximize the efficiency between the 7290 and XP (RWIN etc...)?

Default Does the Blackberry as a modem incur charges? - 06-07-2005, 07:15 AM

Hmmm... Since I'm new here, I guess I should have an intro before the questions, huh?

I am one of the Blackberry Admins for a large Pharmaceutical company, with about 20 years IT experience; currently masquerading as an Email Administrator fighting with an Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 upgrade.
We run (currently) 2 BES servers at v4.0 with plans for 3 more globally and about 1000 current users.
We started on V3.6 with a small deployment using MSDE and had to build a server to host the database (SQL Server 2000) this year prior to the v4 upgrade. Now the big task is to get all the devices and desktops upgraded as simply as possible.
So that's my backround an a tiny portion of my job. I hope I can be of some use here...

Now for the question:

I am using a 7100g and live (pretty much) in the woods. No DSL, Cable, etc...
Would using the BB through Cingular incur airtime charges based on the Phone Plan? I have unlimited data, but very limited phone...
My local dial-up is even poor...
Also (I guess I can try this, but I'll ask anyway) will this method support VPN?
I'll be testing all this stuff tonight or tomorrow, I just got the modem portion configured last night.

Thanks!
Bob H

Default Poor TMo network performance - 06-12-2005, 12:17 PM

Guys;

I am having some luck using my 7100t as a modem, but as others have reported, the latency is beyond terrible.

I was thinking that maybe we should start a new thread to capture data on the TMO modem performance issue specifically (otherwise it just gets lost in the noise of this thread).

Anybody else think this is a good idea?

Anybody else disappointed with the GPRS performance on TMo?

----------
Thanks, Mark

Anyone have a idea to look for when i dont see the modem , checked the policy and its not disabled.

Tried 2 different 7290 and 2 different computers both with the desktop handheld manager running and installed.

Search for hardware dont help either.

Incase some of you are having troubles connecting your BlackBerry to your laptop as a modem and you have your modem drivers installed and under the modem you cannot change your COM port and you cannot query your modem do the hopefully the following may help. If you right click on your BlackBerry Handheld Manager (on your task bar next to the clock) and click settings (it may list like COM1 or COM2 I've even seen Com1 and COM6 and so on) I'm not sure if you just have to do one or both, I got it working so im not touching it, click configure on each COM port and change it from Disabled to the max speed of 115200 and check Enable USB-to-Serial converter compatibility. By doing so you should be able to query your modem now. I use AT&T / Cingular but i have it configured for AT&T and it works. If you get it to work and try it another time and it says "cannot open port" when you try to dial out, query the modem and then it should work, sounds werid but it works.

Hope this helps some of you.

And has any one been on DSL reports and seen how fast their speed is? though AT&T mines 29K down and 9K up and i was wondering if anyone got faster than that.

An earlier post in this thread stated something about a 7230 working. Is this true? If so how can you do it? If not, another question for T-Mobile customers, if I went out and bought a PCMIA GPRS card off ebay and popped my SIM card in it, would I be able to use the same internet service or do I need some other sort of add-on? Thanks.

Default BlackBerry As Modem (Enabling IPModem) - 06-15-2005, 09:45 AM

Haven't been able to figure out how to enable "BlackBerry IPModem" on BES, I contacted both Cingular and Blackberry only to get "we don't support Blackberries being used a modems". Can anybody tell me how to enable "BlackBerry IPModem" on my BES, I am running BES 4.0.

heathstiles - I'm running on BES 4.0 and i have it working i didn't have to change any setting on the BES server to have my BB work as a modem. I'm also on AT&T / Cingular.

adermott - Try uninstalling you BlackBerrry Destop manager and reinstall 4.0 fresh. It should auto install the "Standard Modem" in your device manager. I haven't found a way to self-install the modem drivers.

I remember having this same problem. i believe the INF file is really a virual com port driver and not a modem driver. It makes an entry called RIM Virtual Port in device manager. Install a standard modem and use this com port for the port and it should work.

In my case I have RIM Virtual Port as com 6. I installed a standard modem and put it on com 6 and it worked...

I cannot get a Query to my Blackberry 7230 (version 4.0) and get a error 692 whenever I try to connect. Thanks for your help. I am running T-Mobile. Is there something I have to enable on the PDA? It is set to COM12 as the blackberry software states, the blackberry desktop manager and the handheld manager are both running. Thanks for your help.

Where do you see this at? COM12? If it is in desktop manager then that may be a problem. It should show USB in desktop manager cuz that is the type of connection you have to the BB. The only place you will see the com port is in device manager and eventually on the modem when you get it installed.

In the desktop manager it shows USB. In the Device Manager it says COM12 (RIM Virtual Port). The modem is installed and I see it there. It just won't query. Thanks.

Did you put in the string for your carrier? +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com","",0,0

That is strange, mines queries just fine so that should work.

Default Out of Touch in the Philippines. Help! - 06-16-2005, 12:41 PM

Friends, I'm travelling in the Philippines and desperately need to use my Blackberry 7100g phone and browser services. What must I do to get telephone and browser services? Do I need a local SIM card or simply need to configure something on my Blackberry?

Yes and it still doesn't query! Why is this happening? I used to have a bleutooth phone do you think there may be a conflict?

Hi - I'm trying with Verizon and I think I'm running into the same problems everyone else is with the 7250 ... I got the modem to set up (I guess) and get this when I query:

However, when I try to connect to the phone, I get a 629 error (in other words the phone/modem isn't even responding to the command to dial out ...). I don't think this is even a problem with Verizon at this point, but the phone isn't responding the way it should. Am I understanding this correctly? I'd like to take this as far as possible - I used Verizon's wireless connectivity through my old Motorola (what a POS phone) and it worked very well for getting my laptop connected, but Verizon told me this morning that what I wanted to do 'was not supported' because I didn't need to do it - the blackberry could do everything I needed to do ... Not quite, but now I'm pissed and want to get this working even more...

Thanks to anyone that got things working on Verizon ...

I had the same problem. I have a 7290 and the inf is in the indicated subdirectory but it won't install with the error msg "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." Right clicking the .inf and selecting "Install" does not work either.

Wink BB MODEM 7290 South Africa - 06-18-2005, 04:36 PM

Just to thank all for there help, i am from south africa, using my BB7290 on Vodacom S.A. some tips and help!
You don't actually install the RIM modem drivers ie: you don't add new modem and browse to the drivers. You add a standard 56k Modem, and unfortunately i had to do it the hard way, query your standard modem on each port till you pick up the Rim Modem.
Once added as in the detailed post
http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=2019
carry on from there
vodacom south africa apn: internet
Extra Initialization: +cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"
Dial Number: *99***1#
that's it enjoy!
and thank you very much for everyone's help here KEEP IT UP!
