Question 7290 with T-mobile

Please Login to Remove!

I talked to t-mobie PDA support for a lot hours, but failed to get it working. I look through here and know at least one person has this working by talking to t-mobile. Can you help?

My laptop has xp prof with sp 2,
I have 4.0 on both desktop mgr and BB,
use wap.voicestream.com, com4,
use username and password for t-mobile web login,
plan: National Business Plan 1000 $59.99 1000 minutes
(35 each additional min.) Unlimited Unlimited 500 messages
(5 each additional message) with BB feature.

Error: keep getting 734.

Thank you in advance. -dale

Default Recap on 7290 + cingular for prospective user?

Could those of you who are _currently_ able to use the 7290 with a Cingular plan please confirm if I (a prospective user of that combination) understand correctly what is spread out throughout various messages in this thread?

1. As of today, you are still able to use your 7290 as a modem to be online with your laptop, correct?

2. When you do so, you get speeds similar to those of a regular 56k modem?

3. If you have a Cingular voice plan plus an unlimited Express Mail Data plan, then using your laptop as described above does not consume minutes from your voice plan but it works as part of the the Express Mail Data plan, correct?

Thank you in advance,

Ludo

All,
Hello, just joined. First time caller, long time listener....er.....

Anyway, Just wanted to let y'all know that I got my 7100G working through Cingular after a couple of hours on the phone with the Cingular tech.

The settings are basically the same as outlined in the FAQ, but with a few modifications:

Starting at Step 8:

IMPORTANT SPECIAL CONFIGURATION STEP
Click Properties -> Advanced and add only ONE of the following Extra initialization commands with the appropriate carrier-specific APN Setting:

For Cingular:
AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular","",0,0

Then on step 9 "Add a New Internet Connection"
1. Click Next

2. Select "Connect To The Internet" then Next

3. Select "Set up my connection manually" then Next

4. Select "Connect using a dial-up modem" then Next.

5. Check only the Standard Modem (if prompted).

6. Give the connection a name such as "BlackBerry Modem", then Next.

7. On the next screen, pick one of the following phone numbers, depending on your carrier:
....If you use GSM/Cingular/AT&T/TMobile: Enter phone number *99***1#
(per the Cingular Tech the *** are pauses)

8. Click Next.

9. On the next screen, pick one of the following, depending on your carrier:

....If you use Cingular:
.........Username: [email address]
.........Password: CINGULAR1

10. Clear all checkboxes ("Use...when anyone..." and "Make this the default...")

11. Click Finish

Once the the connection has been created, check the properties page, Networking Tab, Settings: make sure that "Enable Software Compression" is unchecked. I have not played with this much, but my settings are set under the TCP/IP properties > Advanced > General tab, "Use IP Header Compression" is checked.

Also, under the FAQ heading "I use Cingular. It doesn't work!"
I asked about these options, and evidently they have been re-named.
I previously owned a Sony Ericsson T616, and used it as a modem, so I had the "Media Works" package on my account already. The cost is $19.99 for 1500 Text Messages, 300 MMS messages, and Unlimited WAP internet access.

I have reviewed my past Cingular bills, and I have used in excess of 20 MB, with no additional charges as shown on last month's bill:

Msg/KB
Included Msg/KB Billed Billed
Wireless Data InPlan Used Msg/KB Rate Total Charge
MEdia Works
MEdia Works WIX
Text Messaging 1,500 248 0.00
INTERNET XPRESS 20,615 20,615 0.00 0.00
Subtotal $0.00

Explanation for using the wap.cingular APN as opposed to the isp.cingular? According to the Cingular tech, there are three APN's that are available and provisioned on the GPRS network: 1) blackberry.net - used for connection and transport to the BES server. 2) wap.cingular - used for internet connections (browsing, etc.) from the Blackberry. 3) isp.cingular - used for all other services (Laptop Connect for example, which for unlimited service is $79.99!)

If you use the wap.cingular, it is tagged as WAP traffic, therfore billed as if the traffic originated from the browser of your Blackberry!

I have been using my Sony previously, and have had pretty good luck with it. I am now using my Blackberry with very good results. Matter of fact, I posted this message using my Blackberry as a modem!

Default 7290 with T-mobile and Cingular

I can confirm that 7290 can be used as modem with Cingular. Just follow the instructions here.

As for t-mobile, I keep getting 734 error. I feel that this is casued by username and password. Can sb who get this work with t-mobile advise us how to overcome this?

Thanks. -Dale

Default Still wondering about charges aspect of 7290 + Cingular

Can someone from among the Cingular subscribers clarify, though, how the modem use figures into the Cingular charges. It does not use up minutes (right?) but works as part of the Unlimited XpressMail plan? But if one had the 4 MB XpressMail plan than the use as a modem would quickly put one over the limit? Or does the use as a modem not count toward the 4 MB?

Thanks in advance for clarifying these specifics.

It will quickly go over the limit. Do not use the modem unless you are on an unlimited plan.

I had the same problem as well. Basically, the issue is that the install creates a modem with such a default name (Standard Modem) that you don't think that it really did install something. This was with 4.0.0.30 and a 7290/Cingular.

First Time Poster so be gentle....I am trying to install the modem for use when dialling up to O2 UK but I cannot manage to get Windows to see the device as a Modem. Is there anything I need to get running on the device before trying to install the modem drivers into Windows. I am trying to use the RimSerial.inf within Modem Drivers but this is saying there isn't any information. Could someone also point me in the direction of the correct Modem Drivers if there are any others that I need to use? Many Thanks, Ken

No. But maybe ask the PocketMac people to make a driver.

Default blackberry data plan or MediaWorks

Do you have the blackberry data plan or did Cingular let you keep MediaWorks? Do you see GPRS or gprs on your screen?

I do what you do on a moto v400, and would be delighted if it'll work with no changes on the 7100g I'm about to get. I'll probably get the blackberry data plan because I want to use BWC.

Actually I have both. When I was the call with the Cingular tech, I told him that I wanted that functionality, he said that I would be charged the extra cost of $19.99. He didn't understand why I wanted it, because supposedly the blackberry plan includes WAP access.

I won't receive my next bill until after the 21, but I will keep all posted here on the forum.

GPRS is on my screen.

My 7100g on Cingular was working fine as a modem until up upgraded my pc to Windows XP SP2. I now get the dreaded 734 error. I tried redoing all the steps and recreating my dial out internet connection with no luck. Anyone else experience something similar? Any resolutions in mind?

Just figured I would chime in:
"I couldn't find WIX Extended Internet either and I kept getting error 7?? ppp host terminated, then I upgraded to OS 4.0 and it instantly started working, thanks Mark and everyone else, you are the best, drinks on me if you're ever in Texas. Just FYI, I have the "data connect" or "laptop connect" packages on my phone number."

I have a 7100t w/ OS 3.8 and am successful using the modem function. I want to upgrade to OS 4, but have heard that I will lose this functionality. Can someone verify that this is true or not? Thanks!

Hi folks,

First let me say a big Thank You to the people who have the time/knowledge and patience to figure these things out and then post them for all of us to use.

/SALUTE

Now on to my problem. I continue to get a 718 error, remote server took too long to respond or something to that nature. This ocurs after about 45 seconds of verifying the username/password. Now let me list a few things I have tried, in an effort to fix this error.

1. Reinstalled both the BB desktop manager and the Phone program, both downloaded from the TMO website.

2. Spoke with a level 3 BB/PDA specialist at TMO tech support, who after reinstalling/reconfiguring everything I had just done, suggested I play around with the APN string. After that advice he had nothing left to offer.

3. Took TMO's advice and played with a number of different APN strings to include ones that contained the "internet2.voicestream.com" option. This changed nothing.

4. Added the specific DNS settings, this also changed nothing.

For now I am at a loss and VERY frustrated, I switched from the IPAQ 6315 for the size and for the fact the Rep told me I could link it to my laptop as a modem and that TMO supported this. I made the mistake of telling my boss that I may have the ability to do this and he took the ball and ran with it. Now I/we are committed to sending daily reports with multimedia imbedded (mostly Power Point), to the Surgeon Generals Office. The ONLY option that allowed us to do this was using the BB as a modem on a laptop. So if anyone has any others suggestions that I haven't thought of, please let me know. I need to have this up and working by 0700 Sunday 17 April, 2005.

Thanks in advance.
