Lightbulb What do I need to setup the BES Express with Exchange 2003 and a Blackberry 8700G? - 10-22-2006, 12:10 PM

Hi Folks,

I'm absolutely new to this whole Blackberry craze and I'm really at a loss right now.

I'm working at a small IT-Service Shop, we primarily deploy MS Windows Servers and Clients, including Exchange, SQL Server and so on.

We are using several Windows 2003 Servers in our office, and are running MS Exchange Server 2003.

My boss has gotten hold of a used Blackberry 8700G without a SIM-Card.
He has a SIM-Card of the german carrier E-Plus, which he currently uses in his cell phone.

He wants to use this Blackberry 8700G to access his Exchange Inbox while he's on the road.
I already heard that the Blackberry Enterprise Server Express is available free of charde from RIM, with one CAL included.

I already registered for the Software and downloaded it yesterday.

So, could I just put the E-Plus SIM Card from my boss in the blackberry and configure the BES to push the Exchange Inbox of my boss to the 8700G?
Or are there any other prerequisites that need to be taken care of?

Does the BES work at all with E-Plus SIM cards? Does he need a special contract with EPlus?
Any hints on where to start would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Dominik

You will need to have the BlackBerry Service on your boss' sim card before he will be able to use the BlackBerry.
For the installation of BES, check the installation documents found in the docs directory in the file you downloaded for BES Express. If you have any issue, came back here and search and post if you don't find an answer or go to BlackBerry Knowledge Base or go to http://www.blackberry-forum.de

From which carrier is the 8700g your boss have? If it is a T-Mobile Germany Prosumer device it will NOT work with Eplus.

Thank you for your quick reply, I'll check the documentation from my BES Download!

The Blackberry is not from T-Mobile, however, it is from the german provider O2.
I already tried my T-Mobile and E-Plus SIM Card, but it wasn't recognized..I think the blackberry was simlocked from O2 to prevent other SIM cards from working with this unit.

Is this common practice with Blackberries or is there some way around this?

In any case, thanks alot for your effort!

If you have a look around you can 'unlock' the unit to make it that the unit can accept what carrier you want it to!

Cheers!

Greetings James,

You can find it at www(dot)blackberry.net/select/server/express.shtml.

My newbie status prevents me from posting the actual URL.

Take care,
Rik
