Have quite a few contacts in the directory of my old 8520.

Recently got a new identical machine.

Switched SIM cards and used 'back up and restore' on my PC but it does not carry over ALL the numbers from my original blackberry to new blackberry.

Have rung my provider O2 who advise me 'back up and restore' again, still doesn't work.

I know on original blackberry SIM card is full so can't transfer from original blackberry to SIM , is that anything to do with it?

how are you doing a backup and restore? Are you using desktop manager?
Also why is the new SIM on your new blackberry full already. Try not using the SIM for contacts and use the included contacts App.

Sync your contacts on the old BB to Outlook or Google contacts and then sync the new BB with the chosen method.

Make sure that you don't have any FILTERS active on the BlackBerry.

Yes am using Desktop manager.
There's only one SIM card (from original blackberry) and its full.

Where is filter's setting on blackberry?

Outlook /Google contacts. Any links or more info on these?

Contacts/Address Book > menu button > Filter > uncheck all the boxes

How are you telling the SIM is full? Do you store text messages on the SIM?

If you do store on the SIM, this may help.

1-On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, go to Options > SMS.
2-Press the Menu key and click SMS options.
3-Go to Leave Messages On SIM Card.
4-Press the Menu key again and click Change Option.
5-Select No.
6-Press the Menu key and click Save.
7-Open Messages on the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone and press the Menu key.
8-Locate the View Folder menu option.
9-Select SMS SIM Card Inbox.
10-Delete any unnecessary SMS text messages in order to create space on the SIM card.
