Bit of a newbie here hoping for some help!

I bought a blackberry curve 8900 secondhand off ebay for the missus, it had no screen and had no guarantee as to what else might be wrong. Having got a second hand screen fitted, everything appears to work apart from making/receiving calls and texts.
Now I have tried pulling the battery, tried a re install of the O.S and I even put in a password so that I could enter a wrong one 10 times so it would wip e and reinstall. No joy though to date, still cannot make or receive calls and texts despite showing a good signal and gprs showing in the corner.
Everything else seems to work bar this. I thought that the phone might be blacklisted but I found a site that you enter the IMEI number and it came back saying my phone was unblocked.
The phone is not locked either as i have checked this and the network is showing disabled.
If I go in to "manage settings" I can see that an O2 Mobile Network is checked, and then "service status" shows under Mobile Voice that the status is emergency calls only, connection not connected.
I have somewhere along the line reregistered the phone I think, but still nothing.
I must point out that I am using an O2 sim with an ordinary tarrif, it is not a blackberry tarrif although I would not have thought this matters for what I am trying to do at the moment. Indeed, I have my own blackberry 8900 and am just using an ordinary vodafone sim tarrif and that works fine. I tried the vodafone sim in the missus phone but it is exactly the same, cannot make/receive calls or txts.
So, has anyone any other ideas as to what I can do to get this phone working at all?

Is there any evidence on the original carrier of the phone i.e branding etc? If there is try phoning them and just query the fault, explain the problem and they will tell you if it is definitely blacklisted or not. Also if there is anything they can do to help you possibly resolve the problem they will help.

Yes, the original carrier must be vodafone since their icon is on the back and when you boot the phone the vodafone logo is set as a theme.

Okay, I rang up Vodafone and sure as eggs the phone is blacklisted. Unless I can find the original owner I am pretty much stuck. No point going back to the ebay seller as was advertised as faulty no returns. Its either been lost or stolen in its past - will probably end up breaking it for spares since I wont be able to use it - shame as everything else works just fine - oh well, a lesson learnt here.

I wouldn't describe a blacklisted phone as faulty. The ebay seller might have stole it themselves, or knew it was stolen.
Perhaps reporting to ebay may get it investigated, it isn't as described, and you may get your money back.
