You need the bolt-on. [Facebook won't work without it, technically neither should app world]. The browser requires the bolt-on also.
The bolt-on allows you to connect to Blackberry's servers and get something called "service books". These control access to the things on your phone. The browser requires the proper service book, which you get once you have the bolt-on.
