Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and I'd like to get some help on my new Torch. After a month of just using it, the power button started acting up. My phone would keep on powering off by itself. If I was in the middle of something say, composing a message, it will suddenly go back to the home menu, then eventually the message "Turning Handheld Off" will appear and Id have to press a button to prevent it from shutting down.

So I figured it was a software problem so I reinstalled the OS 6.0.0.246. After reinstalling, the phone did not shut down on its anymore but instead, the power button won't work at all. So I tried reinstalling the OS again but its still the same. Hope anyone out there can help me with this. Thanks so much in advance!

Did the phone get wet, even a little?

If you power the device down by clicking the homescreen icon can you turn it back on using the power key or do you have to reinsert the battery for it to work?

No you can just turn it on by reinserting the battery. What does that mean?

Sounds like a hardware fault to me, although I find it strange that it worked normally with a different OS.

If you downgrade the OS does the power key work normally?

I haven't tried downgrading yet. How do you do that?
But if this works in an older OS then that means this phone has a problem right? Since other torches have upgraded theirs successfully.

There are instructions to install in the first post, although you may wish to backup your data with desktop manager and then wipe with JL_Cmdr just to be sure.

If the keys were subject to any moisture they will give the results you see in most cases. you can reload the OS as suggested by SyTner but be sure to follow the instructions. I’m not suggesting you wont be able to reload the OS but you did indicate you did not understand what a batter pull was, that usually means the person will have further difficulty with repair.
As I said before, I have a daughter and she had issues with her BB and said it never was wet even a bit. I later found out that in her mind having the BB in the bathroom with a shower running did not constitute being wet. After I explained the shower and the steam stuff if really water( enter the dumb look) she admitted it “might” have been a little wet because she had to wipe the screen to see the texts. If this is the case and the OS replace does not work and because the time lag, the keys may be damaged. In that case you have a couple of options. Replace the BB or attempt to clean or replace the keyboard. This all depends on your ability. There are videos on the internet that will step you thru the process if you decide to try. You could also send it in for repair to a good shop. Some are in the vendor section on this site.

it usually means one or more keys are defective. in your case the power button.

can you make calls and end with the red end key? press it during a call to your home or someone you can test with. its the same key for power up. if not then you have bad keys. if you can hang up try to reload the OS.

Do you take your phone into the bathroom of your shower? High humidity ruined one of my phones once...
