Default edge but no EDGE

I've had my BB Curve 8310 for a little over a year and it has given excellent service. About four weeks ago it abruptly stopped doing email and internet, although other functions (phone, text messaging, applications) work okay. It no longer displays EDGE, only edge.

I've spent several hours in consultation with my service provider -- both via phone and in person -- to no avail. Even have a new SIM card. I've been through numerous hard resets and "Host Routing Table/Register Now" attempts, to no avail. Upon my request, a consultant at the service provider's shop tried temporarily inserting the SIM card into a pristine unit and informed me that it immediately connected and provided browser services.

This suggests a fault with my own unit itself. If this is the case, its timing is perversely incredible, happening exactly seven days after expiration of warranty. While I have handset insurance, the deductible makes replacement at this time prohibitive.

I pondered whether there might be a software-related hiccup and I have performed a memory wipe, with no beneficial result.

This is sort of the last gasp of a desperate consumer. Are there any other expedients I might try before abandoning and reverting to my aged Nokia?

Lowercase edge means that you aren't connected to RIM's data. Do you have a BB data plan activated on your account? If so, have you tried a battery pull?

Yes, I do have a data plan. Have had it for a year plus seven days and my provider advises me that it's still active and I'm paying for it. I had EDGE (u.c.) for that time -- and it worked flawlessly -- but it abruptly went to edge-only (l.c.) at the end of that time. I've done probably several dozen battery pulls.

Maybe have the carrier delete the data plan and then re-add it and resend service books.

Did you do anything just before this happened - drop it, get it wet, installed an app or theme, OS upgrade, etc.?

All else fails, try wiping with Jl_cmdr (see the FAQ) and reload the OS (see the yellow sticky at the top of the 8300 section for latest OS and instructions).

The carrier has, in fact, deleted and reestablished the data plan and confirmed by temporarily inserting the SIM card into a different BB. It worked in the other unit, but not my own.

My unit actually has been dropped -- from waist level onto pavement. It's conceivable that's the culprit -- but it happened maybe six months ago. If so, I'm still trying to feature how this could suddenly, selectively, and belatedly take out the data access, leaving the other services intact. The unit kept working fine until December 17. Never been wet, never had an OS upgrade. I have variously installed/removed/upgraded apps, which is one reason I'm raising this line of inquiry. I'm suspicious of an inadvertent conflict.

The Jl_cmdr wipe is probably the next step ... and I think this is the advice I was fishing for -- but not sure where to look for in the FAQ.

It turned out to be a bit involved and required some retries but I got it wiped and reinstalled.

I'm not sure I understand the bit about leaving the battery out in the first page of instructions ("How do I wipe the BlackBerry using Jl Cmder?"). That didn't work for me. I was able to run Jl_Cmder with the battery in and it wiped OK. But reinstalling required the second page ("What to do next if Jl Cmder will not connect and wipe"). With the battery in.

Even after all that it still just stayed hung on edge (l.c.).

I may call the provider's customer support one more time and have them do their incantations. If no luck, I'll just have to get used to using the BB as a no-frills cellphone until my next contract renewal.
