Default Bold 9000 - SIM card problem

Please Login to Remove!

I have an oldish (2 years) Bold 9000 which until 2 days ago was working perfectly. I removed the SIM card to check if another old Nokia handset was unlocked, which it was & worked fine. When I returned the SIM to my BB, at the top of the screen, it reads "Insert SIM Card".

I checked it was in the right way - it is, cleaned the SIM & the terminals, checked via BB Destop that my software was up to date - it is (4.6) but still get the same message.

All other functions on the phone work - WiFi, emails etc & I can access my address book, SMS messages etc.

I contacted Orange - who promptly sent me a new SIM. But still the same problem. The BB doesn't recognise the SIM - or indeed any other SIM that I've tried.

The phone is in good condition, hasn't been dropped or had any water damage etc

I'm tearing my hair out here! Any help/suggestions/advice very gratefully received!

Welcome to the Forums.

This information is from RIM. You may have to reload the OS if the simple reset does not work.

Overview

The BlackBerry smartphone indicates that it is not receiving a signal, even though other BlackBerry smartphones and wireless devices in the area receive a wireless signal, and the same Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card works in another BlackBerry smartphone.

Cause

The wireless transceiver must be re-initialized and BlackBerry® Device Software must be re-installed.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Perform a hard reset on the BlackBerry smartphone to re-initialize the transceiver.
Run the application loader tool in the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager to reload the BlackBerry Device Software.

TSAC - Thanks for the suggestion. I performed the hard reset (presumably taking the battery & SIM out, then replacing). I then reloaded the Device Software, but it still doesn't recognise the SIM and I still get "Insert SIM card". Picks up WiFi - but of course, no emails, no SMS & no calls!

The SIM (it's a 3G SIM from Orange) Is brand new & does work in 2 x other handsets (but I haven't been able to try it in another BB) and I've tried other Orange SIMS (also known to be working) in my BB - all with the same result!

Any other ideas/suggestions?

you can try a lower OS level or one higher. I would not load an OS not intended for the Bold. It just seems like the OS is corrupted and has a problem. Try doing a wipe . It will put it back to factory. then try the SIM. dont forget to pull the battery.

Although not likely, it may be that it wont work in another BB. Worth a try if you can get or borrow one.
then if not a replacement SIM is in order.

TSAC - once again many thanks for suggestion.

Did as you suggested - complete wipe, then a re-install of the software, but problem still there. It seems that there must be a physical problem with the handset - though I can't imagine how it became damaged.

I got the phone (new) in March 2009 via Carphone Warehouse & have been with Orange from the start. I spoke to a guy in an Orange shop yesterday & he told me that BB's have a 2 year guarrantee - which presumably means I can send it to RIM for repair/replacement. However, I can't find a UK address or phone number to confirm and/or arrange this. Do you have any info please?

Once again, many thanks for all your help so far ...

Warranty is dealt with via the carrier, not RIM.
